Bud Harman has been an IU Health Bedford Cardiac Rehabilitation patient since 2009 when he had his first heart attack.

Today, our team was excited to help celebrate his 100th birthday!

Bud says, "They're all so kind and sweet. They love me and treat everybody so good. I just love'em all. They keep me going. After I leave here, I'm going to Bloomington like I do every week to have lunch with my son. He has something planned for me today–and my grandson is coming here from Denver! We will have a great party."

Cancer patients and cancer survivors are invited to join the monthly Cancer Connections Support and Education Group, facilitated by Cancer Support Community. No registration is necessary.

When: 3 – 4:30 pm on the first Tuesday of the month
Where: IU Health Bedford in the Bass Conference Center behind the cafeteria

The meeting has a different topic every month, with some meetings facilitated by a licensed social worker.

Congratulations to Ben Jones with our Emergency department for earning the Lynda A. Merriman Award for Compassionate Care!

Ben is a unit support technician who has quickly became known for his dedication to patients, colleagues and the community.

“I was making a career change and looking to work in a field that had the right mix of physical, mental and social challenges while actively helping people in need. Working in the Emergency department feels like it ticks those boxes for me.”

"The Lynda" honors team members who provide exceptional compassionate care. Created by the Merriman family through the IU Health Foundation, the award celebrates caregivers who go above and beyond to support patients and families during difficult times.

Ben's nominator says he consistently demonstrates that level of commitment. Some examples include:
• Walking to the hospital from his hotel during a snowstorm to ensure patients would receive care.
• Changing a team member’s flat tire at 5:30 am before his shift.

Ben says he was surprised and deeply honored to receive the award, and he thanks Chuck Merriman for creating a legacy that highlights the importance of compassion in healthcare.

“I would also like to thank the Bedford Emergency team for the nomination and for providing such a supportive environment to learn and grow. I have so much respect for the team I work with, and being able to support them in doing their job is very fulfilling.”

Research from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission shows about 74% of firework-related injuries happen in the weeks before and after July 4. The National Fire Protection Association reports that most of the thousands of people injured while using consumer fireworks over the holiday are children or teenagers.

“To our community members, I encourage you to be safe while enjoying this holiday,” said Robert (Bob) Adams, DO, IU Health Bloomington Emergency Medicine physician. “While Emergency departments and first responders are here to help, we know you’d much rather be enjoying the festivities instead of coming into the hospital because of an injury or medical issue.”

It's going to be another hot day in south-central Indiana, and local Emergency departments are prepared to see more heat-related issues coming through their doors.

Here are some safety tips:
• Stay hydrated with water.
• For children, encourage frequent water intake and have it readily available. Infants under six months should not drink water; breast milk or formula will help their hydration.
• Dress lightly in both color and material.
• Plan to have extra rest time when outside.
• Use water to cool off. Water mists or safe swimming are great ways to cool the skin.
• Never leave a child alone in a car for any time.
