Finding the right fit therapist for yourself as a new or seasoned parent supports the wellbeing of your entire family--even the next generations.
One of the most powerful shifts in parenting can happen when we stop asking only, “How do I get my child to change?” and become curious about the patterns we bring into the relationship too. 💗
So much of parenting can be automatic. We may hear ourselves saying something our parents used to say, react more strongly than the situation seems to warrant, struggle with certain emotions in our children, or enforce a rule simply because “that’s how I was raised.” These patterns can be deeply ingrained, which means we may repeat them without ever consciously choosing them.
But awareness gives us a choice.
We can begin asking ourselves: Why does this behavior trigger me so much? Why is it difficult for me when my child cries, disagrees, says no, or expresses anger? Am I responding to what my child needs in this moment, or am I repeating what was modeled for me?
Becoming aware of a pattern doesn’t mean blaming our parents or shaming ourselves for what we’ve already done. Most parents are parenting with the tools, experiences, and understanding they have at the time. Awareness simply gives us an opportunity to decide what we want to keep, what we want to change, and what we want to leave behind.
And changing generational patterns doesn’t require us to become perfect parents. It can look like apologizing when apologies weren’t modeled for us, listening when we were told to stop crying, allowing respectful disagreement when obedience was expected, or learning to regulate ourselves instead of making our children responsible for our emotions.
We may not get to choose everything that was passed down to us, but once we can see a pattern clearly, we have a much greater opportunity to choose what gets passed on. 💗
