Home Instead For 26 years, Home Instead of Harford/Cecil has enhanced the lives of aging adults.

Family-owned and operated, we build lifelong relationships with our caregivers, our seniors, their families, and the wonderful community we are so proud to serve. Home Instead has been family owned and operated since our establishment on Main Street in downtown Bel Air more than 20 years ago. We strive to serve our seniors and their families - so they may face the challenges of aging with dignity, pride, compassion and comfort - and to serve our devoted CAREGivers - so they may find rewarding, fulfilling work in service to others. We live and work in this community and remain committed to contributing to it however we can. Whether it's sponsoring the Walk to End Alzheimer's at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen or collecting Christmas gift donations for lonely, isolated seniors, we are always looking for opportunities to help others.

🏡 A safer home can help you keep doing what you love.

Sometimes, small changes around the house can make a big difference in helping older adults stay safe, comfortable and independent at home.

In a new article from Drew and Jonathan, Home Instead’s own Dr. Lakelyn Eichenberger shares practical ways to make a home safer as we age—from better lighting to simple updates that support everyday independence.

💚 Because feeling at home means being able to enjoy it.

Across the country, Home Instead teams are showing up with purpose at Walk to End Alzheimer’s events—walking in honor of loved ones, supporting families and raising critical funds for the fight to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. 💜

We are proud to partner with the ’sAssociation as a Walk to End Alzheimer’s Gold National Team. Together, Home Instead has raised more than $5.7 million over the past 18 years, including $258,000 last year alone, to advance Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

This year, we are well on our way to reaching our goal—and every donation and every step makes a meaningful difference. Thank you to every Care Pro, office team member, client, family member and community partner who walks, fundraises and helps move this mission forward.

When searching for a senior living community, touring more than one place can make all the difference.

Look beyond the amenities and notice the everyday interactions: Do team members know residents by name? Do they speak directly to the person who may live there? Does the community feel warm, personal and welcoming?

In this Caregiver Chats clip, Dr. Lakelyn and Nicole Will share why comparing communities can help families find the right fit for their loved one.

One tour rarely tells the whole story.

When you’re exploring senior living options for someone you love, visit more than one community—and pay attention to the details that reveal how people are truly cared for.

Are residents greeted by name? Are conversations warm and personal? Does the team speak directly to the older adult, not just their family?

Sometimes the clearest answer comes from comparing how each place feels.

Touring senior living communities for a loved one? Look beyond the scheduled visit.

In this clip from Caregiver Chats, Nicole Will shares why it can be helpful to stop by at a different time—like an evening or weekend—and notice the everyday experience. Are residents interacting naturally? Do team members seem calm, attentive and familiar with the people they support?

The right community is about more than the building. It’s about finding a place where your loved one can feel connected, valued and at home.

A scheduled tour can show you the highlights. An unscheduled visit can show you everyday life.

When you’re considering a senior living community for someone you love, Nicole Will suggests stopping by at a different time—an evening or weekend—and paying attention to what you see.

Are residents connecting? Does the team seem calm and engaged? Do people know one another by name?

It’s not just about finding a place to live. It’s about finding a place where your loved one can feel known, connected and at home.

When families begin exploring senior living, it’s easy to focus on the building first: the amenities, the dining room, the activity calendar.

But as Nicole Will () reminds us, the better place to begin is with the person.

What brings your loved one joy? Where do they find purpose? What kind of connection will help them feel known and at home?

In this episode of Caregiver Chats, Dr. Lakelyn and Nicole share a more person-centered way to approach one of caregiving’s biggest decisions.

Domestic violence doesn’t have an age limit.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and while we often think about domestic violence affecting younger adults, older adults can experience abuse too, sometimes quietly and for many years.

Abuse later in life may look like physical harm, but it can also be emotional abuse, intimidation, isolation from family and friends, neglect, or someone controlling money, medications, transportation, or access to help.

Because we work closely with older adults and their families throughout Harford and Cecil Counties, we believe awareness matters.

Check in. Pay attention. Listen without judgment. Sometimes simply knowing that someone sees you and believes you can be the first step toward getting help.

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home at every age. 💜

HFC's Caregiver Respite Program

Caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia is no small task. If you're seeking support, you’re in the right place. Your time is valuable, so we’ve made it simple to find everything you need to apply. Let’s get started.

What are respite grants?
‍HFC respite grants cover the cost of professional, in-home care so you can feel confident about the care being provided to your person while you take some time for yourself.

In-Home Respite Grant- 100 hours total of respite care to be used within 3 months of being awarded

If you would like to see if you or someone you know may qualify, please visit the HFC link below:

https://wearehfc.org/care-grants/

Or also, please feel free to contact our office with any questions at 410-420-7950

*Respite grants provide in-home, professional care and have NO CASH VALUE. Cash awards cannot be issued in lieu of in-home care. HFC’s works with Home Instead to coordinate the in-home care awarded through HFC’s respite grant program. If care cannot be provided by a licensed provider within 60 days of the award for any reason, the grant will become void.

"I don’t need help. I’m fine.”

But you notice the little things.

Meals are being skipped. The house is harder to manage. Appointments are forgotten. Maybe they’re spending more time alone. And you find yourself wondering, “Are Mom or Dad really okay?”

For someone who has spent a lifetime being independent, accepting help can feel like losing it.

But the right support doesn’t take independence away. It can help protect it.

Start small. A little companionship, help with meals, errands or everyday tasks may be all that’s needed to make staying at home safer and easier.

If your family is having the “I don’t need help” conversation, we’re here to help you navigate it.
