When what you are doing is not working, and has not been working for long enough that it is affecting your child's daily life.

There's no precise threshold. But there are patterns worth taking seriously, and waiting tends to make them harder to address, not easier.

New on the blog: what is developmentally normal, what moves beyond it, and what getting the right support actually looks like.

They address different parts of the same problem. And for many kids, both matter.

A coach helps a child build skills. A therapist helps a child address what is getting in the way of using them. Those are related but distinct goals, and understanding the difference makes it much easier to figure out what your child actually needs.

New on the blog: a clear breakdown of what each approach does, when each is the right fit, and why emotional regulation is the foundation that makes everything else work.

Probably both, depending on the day.

Helping and enabling don't start from different places. They start from the same place, the same love, the same instinct to support a child who is struggling. The line between them is not obvious, and it shifts as your child develops.

New on the blog: how to tell the difference, and how to build toward independence without blowing up the relationship in the process.

At some point, the helping stopped building anything and started substituting for everything.

Most families don't realize how that happens. It's a series of completely reasonable decisions made in response to a child who was genuinely struggling. And then one day you look up and the entire operation of your child's academic life is running through you.

New on the blog: how to step back without pulling the rug out, and how to rebuild independence in a way that protects the relationship.

Because for kids with executive functioning challenges, small tasks often don't feel as small as they seem.

Executive functioning and emotional regulation are not separate systems. They are managed by overlapping parts of the brain, and they fail together. What looks like an overreaction to a minor request is frequently the visible surface of something that has been building underneath.

New on the blog: what is actually happening, and how to reduce the emotional load around ordinary demands.

Because they have been holding it together all day, and home is where they can finally stop.

The child who holds it together in the classroom and falls apart at home is not being manipulative or dramatic. They are doing exactly what a child does when they feel safe enough to stop performing.

New on the blog: what is actually happening in those after-school hours, and what your child's meltdowns are telling you about their day.

It might be. And if it is, treating it like a motivation problem will make it worse.

Adding pressure to an anxious child increases anxiety, which increases avoidance. The behavior gets worse, not better.

New on the blog: how to tell whether anxiety is driving the procrastination, and what actually helps when it is.

You know the drill.

You've told them to start their homework three times. Their backpack is a disaster. The iPad has been off for twenty minutes and you're still hearing about it…And you're exhausted.

Executive functioning challenges don't mean your child isn't smart or capable. They mean your child needs support building the systems their brain hasn't developed yet. And summer — without the structure of the school day — tends to make everything harder.

That's exactly what the BFC Summer Skills Studio is designed for.

You've read the articles. You've compared the symptom lists. You're still not sure.
That's because these conditions genuinely overlap in ways that are hard to untangle. A child staring at a blank page might be anxious, ADHD, perfectionistic, or struggling with executive functioning. They might look the same. But each one needs something different.

New on the blog: how to tell them apart, and why it matters for getting your child the right support.
