Why can my child explain everything out loud, but struggles to write it down?โœ๏ธ

Handwriting is one of the most complex tasks children do every day. It relies on strength, coordination, visual processing, motor planning, and attention all working together at the same time. If one area is challenging, writing can quickly become frustrating or exhausting.

In occupational therapy, we don't just practice writing over and over we work on the building blocks behind handwriting. Through movement, play, and hands-on activities, we help children develop the skills they need to become more confident and successful writers.

Because sometimes, the answer isn't "practice more." It's building a stronger foundation first. ๐Ÿ’› Learn more: www.butterflypeds.com

Retained primitive reflexes are often associated with movement, but they can also influence skills related to speech and language development. ๐Ÿ’™

Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns that help babies navigate their earliest months of life. As children grow, these reflexes are expected to integrate, making way for more mature motor, sensory, and communication skills.

When certain reflexes remain active beyond the expected age, they may impact:

๐Ÿง  Attention and information processing
๐Ÿ‘‚ Listening and auditory processing
๐Ÿ‘„ Oral motor skills needed for clear speech
๐Ÿ’ฌ Language development and expression

Every child develops differently, and retained reflexes are just one of many factors that can influence communication skills.

Understanding the connections between movement, sensory processing, and communication can help us better support children's overall development ๐Ÿฆ‹

๐Ÿฆ‹ OT Highlight of the Week

What better way to work on regulation than in a cozy space and a creative tunnel? ๐Ÿ’™

This week, one of our kiddos enjoyed exploring a fun tunnel setup that provided a sense of comfort while supporting self-regulation and engagement.

In occupational therapy, we often use playful, child-led activities to help children feel safe, connected, and ready to participate. Sometimes the simplest setups can create the biggest opportunities for growth.

To them, it's a cozy tunnel.
To us, it's a chance to support regulation through play. โœจ

Ever wonder why your child covers their ears, avoids certain textures, or seems to be constantly on the move? ๐Ÿ’™

Sometimes these behaviors aren't "misbehavior" at all. They're clues.

Sensory decoding is the process of understanding what a child's behavior might be communicating about their sensory experience. When we look beyond the behavior itself, we can better understand what support they may need.

The goal isn't to stop the behavior. it's to understand the reason behind it ๐Ÿฆ‹

Every child experiences the world differently, and a little curiosity can go a long way.

Making friends isn't always easy, and for some kids, it can feel especially challenging. ๐Ÿ’›

Our Social Club gives children a chance to connect with peers in a fun, supportive setting while practicing everyday social skills along the way.
Through games, obstacle courses, simple cooking activities, and other hands-on experiences, kids work on things like starting conversations, taking turns, problem-solving, and building confidence with others.

We keep our groups small so each child feels comfortable, supported, and included.

What does a Physical Therapy session look like? ๐Ÿ’™

Sometimes it looks like swinging through the air. Sometimes itโ€™s stretching slime, balancing on a therapy ball, or navigating an obstacle course.

To a child, it feels like play. But behind every activity, theyโ€™re working on important skills like strength, balance, coordination, motor planning, body awareness, and confidence in movement.

Our therapists carefully design each session around each childโ€™s unique goals, creating fun and meaningful opportunities to help them build the skills they need for everyday life.

We love celebrating the hard work, determination, and milestones that happen along the way! ๐Ÿฆ‹

Did you know that some children may go through periods of stuttering as they begin to talk? ๐Ÿ’›

The most common type is called developmental stuttering, and it can happen between the ages of 2.5 and 5 as communication skills are growing and developing.

While some disfluencies can be part of development, early support can make a big difference especially if you notice your child struggling to communicate or feeling frustrated when speaking.

At Butterfly Pediatric Therapy, we offer play-based, child-led speech therapy to help support communication skills, confidence, and connection ๐Ÿฆ‹
