Why can my child explain everything out loud, but struggles to write it down?✏️

Handwriting is one of the most complex tasks children do every day. It relies on strength, coordination, visual processing, motor planning, and attention all working together at the same time. If one area is challenging, writing can quickly become frustrating or exhausting.

In occupational therapy, we don't just practice writing over and over we work on the building blocks behind handwriting. Through movement, play, and hands-on activities, we help children develop the skills they need to become more confident and successful writers.

Retained primitive reflexes are often associated with movement, but they can also influence skills related to speech and language development. 💙

Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns that help babies navigate their earliest months of life. As children grow, these reflexes are expected to integrate, making way for more mature motor, sensory, and communication skills.

When certain reflexes remain active beyond the expected age, they may impact:

👂 Listening and auditory processing
👄 Oral motor skills needed for clear speech
💬 Language development and expression

Every child develops differently, and retained reflexes are just one of many factors that can influence communication skills.

🦋 OT Highlight of the Week

What better way to work on regulation than in a cozy space and a creative tunnel? 💙

This week, one of our kiddos enjoyed exploring a fun tunnel setup that provided a sense of comfort while supporting self-regulation and engagement.

In occupational therapy, we often use playful, child-led activities to help children feel safe, connected, and ready to participate. Sometimes the simplest setups can create the biggest opportunities for growth.

To them, it's a cozy tunnel.
To us, it's a chance to support regulation through play. ✨

Making friends isn't always easy, and for some kids, it can feel especially challenging. 💛

Our Social Club gives children a chance to connect with peers in a fun, supportive setting while practicing everyday social skills along the way.
Through games, obstacle courses, simple cooking activities, and other hands-on experiences, kids work on things like starting conversations, taking turns, problem-solving, and building confidence with others.

We keep our groups small so each child feels comfortable, supported, and included.

Did you know that some children may go through periods of stuttering as they begin to talk? 💛

The most common type is called developmental stuttering, and it can happen between the ages of 2.5 and 5 as communication skills are growing and developing.

While some disfluencies can be part of development, early support can make a big difference especially if you notice your child struggling to communicate or feeling frustrated when speaking.
