Total knee came off the Inpatient-Only list in 2018. Total hip followed in 2020. Now CMS is proposing to remove ⚠️ 637 more procedures, with 801 scheduled for 2028.

For practice-owning surgeons, that shift comes with a real opening. As more procedures become ASC-payable, facility fees that once only flowed to hospitals become accessible to physician-owned centers. Craig Johansen breaks down the opportunity and what it means for health systems watching the same volume shift away.

Not all activities are created equal when it comes to neurorehab. For meaningful change, we have to train the key elements that make a movement functional.

That means looking beyond the movement pattern itself and considering things like force production, responding to perturbations, and the other demands that make movement work in the real world.

On the latest Neuro Navigators, J.J. (J.J. Mowder PT), and Dr. Edelle Field-Fote, PT, PhD, FAPTA, FASIA challenge some of the traditional thinking around task-specific training and explore what it really takes to drive functional restoration.

They also unpack how neuromodulation can be used to amplify meaningful training, rather than treated as the intervention itself.

55% of patients with chronic pain self-discharge from physical therapy before they finish their plan of care.*

A lot of that comes down to what happens between visits. Staffing matters too: when caseloads climb, every patient gets less time, and more people drop off. The two are tangled together.
We're asking clinicians and leaders what they're seeing and where they think things are headed. More than 2,000 have taken the survey so far. It closes soon, but there's still time to add yours.

Heading to HCHB 2026? Join us for a practical look at what it takes to build a home health workforce that stays.

Anna Zimmerman and Tim Altenburg, PT, DPT, will team up with Chris Chimenti, MSPT, from HCR Health Care for “Hire, Onboard, Retain: A Home Health Staffing Playbook.” They’ll share strategies for hiring the right talent, building an onboarding program that sticks, and supporting long-term retention.

Be sure to add their session to your schedule for Thursday, September 10 at 2:45 PM. And while you’re there, stop by booth #107 to say hello and enter to win a Yeti cooler. We’d love to connect!

CJR-X is now mandatory for most hospitals nationwide (except those in TEAM), effective January 1, 2028

For private-practice orthopedic surgeons, that means episode accountability will fall on your Hospital partner with two-sided risk from day one and gainsharing opportunities that could be tied to quality and cost control.

Our new playbook breaks down how the model works, where surgeons fit, and four moves to make before it takes effect: https://bit.ly/3UCr4dF

This Labor Day weekend, we're thinking about the people who do the work of rehab care.

The vacancy rate at outpatient PT practices is running near 9.5% — nearly double the national average across all industries.* The people still in the room are carrying more than ever, from heavier caseloads and less time per patient to the quiet strain that comes with it.

We're building a full picture of where rehab care really stands, training, staffing, outcomes, and everything in between, and the response has been remarkable. Over 1,200 clinicians and rehab leaders have already weighed in. The survey's still open, but not for long.

However you're spending the long weekend, add your voice before it closes 👇

Navigating the financial realities of aging in place often means looking beyond traditional reimbursement to find creative solutions that work for each client.

Dawn Heiderscheidt, OTR/L, CAPS, and Dr. Sydney Marshman, OTD, OTR/L, BCG, share how therapists can become experts in the resources available in their local communities, from long-term care insurance and home equity to connecting with financial advisors, attorneys, and other professionals.

The more therapists understand the resources available in their communities, the more options they can help clients explore.

Listen to Innovative Aging: Aging-in-Place: How Do We Navigate the Reimbursement Gap? with host Carol Chiang, OTR/L, CAPS, ECHM, CHAMP.
