I have recommended this article many times to families dealing with intense (and sometimes aggressive) melt downs

Many children and adults with autism exhibit aggressive behaviours - severe tantrums, anger, violent outbursts including self-harm and rage ‘episodes’.

Are there really more autistic boys than girls? Or is it an artifact of the diagnostic process and research in the past that creates aa s*x bias?

The fact that autism seems to affect more boys than girls is often attributed to diagnostic gaps, but the skew remains largely unexplained. Some scientists are turning to basic biology for answers.

Talking to kids about Ukraine

With the world's attention on Russia's attack on Ukraine, children may be picking up on what is going on whether we like it or not. Psychologists say adults can turn the difficult conversations around the conflict into moments of growth for kids and explain how to do it.

This is a video of a young man (age 18) who lives in the UK discussing his experience of PDA with his mom. He is extremely articulate in being able to get inside and really talk about the experience and how frustrating it can be. The UK is far ahead of the US in researching this sub-category of autism and providing supports and services. For example, he references the fact that he is living in a special housing unit with an attached school for PDA youth. these schools are becoming a widespread as a form of state-funded support for autism in the UK.

Please note that in the video the speaker refers to PDA as a diagnosis. In the US, PDA is NOT an official diagnosis (here we speak of PDA as a sub-category of ASD, much as auditory processing deficits are a common subcategory of ADHD). However, PDA is still a very useful and important framework for understanding ASD and related conditions on the neurodiversity spectrum (such as ADHD, which can also involve elements of demand avoidance).

Be aware that you do not need to seek a diagnosis beyond autism (or ADHD, etc.) to understand yourself or your child as falling into the category of PDA. While I very much hope to see PDA become an official diagnosis in the future, for the time being, the emphasis of myself and professionals like me serving this population, is on advocacy and spreading information about this important aspect of autism.

I often use stories and children’s literature that is story-like in my therapy. My first master’s thesis (in teaching) was on storytelling as a vehicle for moral development. Stories are an incredibly important part of learning to be human, and if it can help us parent more effectively, even better!!

At the top of the world, the Inuit culture has developed a sophisticated way to sculpt kids' behavior without yelling or scolding. Could discipline actually be playful?

Autistic Hoya--one of the important voices in the Neurodiversity Movement

Activists argue that rather than trying to ‘cure’ the neurodivergent, society should learn to appreciate and accommodate their needs

Children with autism express themselves truthfully regardless of the social consequences. I know, because I am autistic.

More resources for talking about race with kids

Nope. Silence about race can reinforce racism by letting children draw their own conclusions.
