When the Tide Carries Our Name

This powerful poem reflects the deep sense of place and belonging shared by our Lummi community. As Lhaq'temish “People of the Sea”, our identity is rooted in the water, the land, and the generations who came before us.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we are honored to share this poem, created by one of our community members. It speaks to the strength of our spirit, the importance of knowing where we come from, and the responsibility we carry for those who are watching and learning from us.

While our environments can shape our experiences, they do not define our worth or limit our potential. Instead, we find pride in our community, in our identity, and in the resilience that continues to carry us forward.

Connection to culture, land, and community can be an anchor for our mental health and wellness. As we begin this month, may this poem serve as a reminder: our roots are not just behind us—they are within us, guiding every step forward.
