I painted this in a session where my client was processing grief. I paint along side my clients as my body also holds my own grief and for a bit it holds the grief of others.
I reflected on my own native lineage, the Lumbee or people of the Dark Water. This piece represents those who have been taken and killed. But it also represents the water that holds us and how it created space for resilience against colonizing forces and offers life, healing and hope to grow.
We must remember the missing and murdered indigenous women, girls and 2 spirit people as they experience a disproportionate amount of violence compared to other people groups.
Today is a call to remember. And a call to notice more closely the native world and people around you.
