✨July Resident Spotlight: Dorothy Dickinson✨
Dorothy Dickenson has lived a life filled with hard work, resilience, and a deep love for family.
Born in Sedro-Woolley, Dorothy was one of four children, although one sibling sadly passed away at birth. When she was eight years old, her family moved to Concrete, where she grew up and graduated from high school.
At just 18 years old, Dorothy married her first husband, Adolf, and together they welcomed their son, Michael. After their marriage ended, Dorothy remained in the family home, raising her son with strength and determination.
In 1979, Dorothy married Benny, and together they had two more children. The couple built a busy and rewarding life in Sedro-Woolley, purchasing a motor paper route and working side by side. Their greatest joy, however, was opening their home to others. Along with raising their own children, Dorothy and Benny became foster parents, caring for six children over the years. They also lovingly raised their granddaughter until she was ten years old.
Dorothy has always had a passion for cooking, especially preparing large holiday meals that brought her sister and extended family together each season. She also enjoyed embroidery, creating beautiful handmade pieces with patience and care.
As the years went by, Dorothy began experiencing difficulty with her legs, leading to frequent falls. After participating in rehabilitation at North Cascades Health & Rehab, she was able to return home for a time. Eventually, it became clear that living alone was no longer safe, and she returned to North Cascades, where she has become a cherished member of our family.
Today, Dorothy enjoys shopping outings, getting her hair done, working on puzzles, visiting with friends, and watching movies. She is known for being honest, having a little bit of spice in her personality, and possessing a heart of gold that shines through in her interactions with everyone around her.
We are grateful to have Dorothy as part of the North Cascades family. Her resilience, caring nature, and wonderful sense of humor make her a joy to know.
