Not every family record gives you an exact date. That doesn’t mean you have to leave the information out of your Family Tree.

FamilySearch lets you add incomplete or approximate dates, such as a year, month and year, or dates marked “About,” “Before,” or “After.” You can also add a date range when you know the event happened within a specific period.

Use what you know, record it clearly, and keep researching for the details that can help complete your ancestor’s story.

Not every historical record on FamilySearch is indexed, but that doesn’t mean it’s out of reach.

Collections marked “Browse Images” let you explore digitized records page by page. Use thumbnails, indexes, tables of contents, dates, names, and image numbers to narrow your search and uncover records that may not appear in a name search.
