🧔 Happy International Beard Day! 🧔

Beards are great—but did you know that facial hair and other facial coverings can sometimes make it a little harder to understand speech, especially for someone with hearing loss?

When we communicate, we don't rely on our ears alone. We also use visual cues, including lip movements, facial expressions, and the shape of the mouth, to help fill in the pieces we may not hear clearly.

For someone with hearing loss, a beard, mustache, mask, or other facial covering can make those visual speech cues more difficult to see. This can be especially noticeable in noisy environments or when someone is already relying heavily on lip-reading or facial cues.

👂 The good news? There are simple ways to make communication easier:

• Face the person when speaking
• Make sure your face is well lit
• Reduce background noise when possible
• Speak clearly without shouting
• Get the listener's attention before you start talking
• Be patient and rephrase if something wasn't heard correctly

And to all the bearded folks out there: keep the beard! 🧔 We just might need to work a little harder to make sure everyone can see—and hear—the conversation.

🌿 Hearing Health in the Community 👂💙

Last Friday, Whatcom Audiology had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Lummi Island Health & Wellness Center for a special hearing health event.

We provided an informational presentation about the connection between hearing loss and other health conditions, highlighting why taking care of your hearing is an important part of taking care of your overall health. We were also able to provide hearing screenings to members of the Lummi Island community.

It was an incredible opportunity to connect with the community, share valuable hearing health education, and provide accessible screenings—all in such a beautiful and welcoming venue. 🌊🌲

We’re grateful to the Lummi Island Health & Wellness Center for having us and to everyone who took the time to join us. Thank you for allowing us to be part of such a meaningful day! 💙
