The Buck Moon reminds us that growth is sometimes subtle and quiet. Like the changing seasons and a buck regrowing its antlers, we’re constantly changing in ways that aren’t always obvious day to day. Perhaps this Full Buck Moon can simply be an invitation for us to slow down, look around, and honor how far we’ve come on our own growth journeys 🌕🦌

It’s July 1st. Pride Month has ended, but the work of supporting LGBTQIA+ people continues all year long.

If you’ve ever thought, “I want to help, but I have no idea where to start,” this post is for you.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve had several people ask me, “What can allies actually do about the hundreds of anti-LGBTQ bills being introduced across the country?”

So I created this guide.

You do not have to become an expert in government or legislation before your voice matters. One email. One phone call. One school board meeting. One public comment. One vote. Those actions add up.

Whether you’re LGBTQIA+, an ally, a parent, an educator, a healthcare professional, a wellness provider, a community leader, or simply someone who believes everyone deserves dignity and equal treatment, I hope this makes civic engagement feel a little less intimidating.

One of the antidotes to helplessness is meaningful action. Never underestimate the ripple effect you might have.

Save this post so you can come back to it whenever you need it, and share it with someone who’s been asking, “How can I help?”

The thoughts running through my mind after participating in a NOH8 photoshoot…

Therapy IS political—not because therapists should tell people who to vote for, but because laws and public policy shape the environments people live in. Those environments influence stress, safety, belonging, access to healthcare, and ultimately mental health, life satisfaction, and well-being.

But to be clear, this isn’t even a partisan issue. Bill Clinton, a Democrat, is who signed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) into law in 1996. Today, however, the current Republican administration has unleashed an unprecedented wave of policies targeting LGBTQIA+ rights, most notably the rights of trans and gender diverse people.

As a therapist, I’ve had a front-row seat to something the research has been telling us for years: political and legal climates can affect people’s sense of safety, belonging, hope, and psychological well-being. Research on structural stigma has found that discriminatory laws and policies are associated with poorer mental health outcomes among LGBTQIA+ people, while expanding legal protections, equal access, and family and community support have been associated with improvements in well-being.

The takeaway: Public policy can shape the conditions in which mental health develops, improves, or deteriorates.

Votes matter. But the follow-through matters too. Holding elected officials accountable at the federal, state, and local levels to do what they promised—and to protect the people they said they’d protect—is just as important as casting a ballot.

The work never ends. Every person deserves to live with dignity, safety, and equal rights.

Keep fighting the good fight, y’all. Human rights and equality for all- now.

I READ A COMMENT SECTION AND GOT RILED UP😳😤 yikes!

I usually do not read comment sections because they tend to leave me genuinely activated and upset. But this one hit a little too close to home and I couldn’t look away.

I keep seeing the same argument over and over again on the internet:
“Why do LGBTQIA+ people even need a Pride flag? Isn’t that divisive? The only flag is the AMERICAN FLAG!”

So I wanted to take a moment to unpack those ideas, which really sting to read- and to explain some of the history behind why the Pride flag is important.

At the end of the day, LGBTQIA+ people deserve to live with peace, dignity, safety, respect, joy, and equal access to the same rights, protections, and opportunities afforded to everyone else. Period.

Pride was never about separating LGBTQIA+ people from the rest of society. It was born from a genuine need for visibility, community, belonging, and equal treatment in a world that has not always offered those things.

If you’re an ally, please don’t underestimate the power of your voice. Have conversations. Share facts. Challenge misinformation. Make your support visible. LGBTQIA+ people shouldn’t have to fight these battles alone.

LGBTQIA+ people deserve hate-free comment sections, harassment-free Pride events, and nervous systems that don’t have to brace for hostility every time we open social media🙃

Patiently awaiting the year I don’t have to post this during Pride Month.

Allies- this post is for you 📣

While the LGBTQIA+ community is celebrating their love, gender identity and expression, freedom, creativity, and joy, allies are called upon to do much more than simply repost a “love is love” quote. LGBTQIA+ advocacy cannot be reduced merely to “love is love” when the conversation has become about basic safety, healthcare access, legal protections, and human rights.

Did you know that, as of this year, the ACLU’s legislative tracker is monitoring 529 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in state legislatures across the United States?! 529!!! The potential impact of many of these bills includes:
* Restricting LGBTQ visibility and expression
* Limiting access to healthcare for transgender people
* Disrupting access to gender-affirming healthcare for people already receiving treatment
* Increasing discrimination
* Making schools less safe for LGBTQ youth
* Forcing disclosure (“outing”) of LGBTQ students
* Reducing legal protections and equal treatment under the law
* Making public spaces less safe

This is why therapy and wellness are political. When laws target a community’s identity, the effects are not only political—they are psychological and can be deeply traumatic. Policies shape safety, healthcare access, family stability, school environments, and civil rights—all of which directly impact mental health and wellbeing.

And allyship goes far beyond an Instagram post.
Who we vote for matters. The policies we support matter. Contacting legislators with specific demands matters. Speaking up when LGBTQIA+ rights are threatened matters. Challenging our workplaces, schools, communities, and the systems we’re in when they fail our LGBTIA+ neighbors and loved ones matters.

Pride is a celebration—but it has always been, first and foremost, a protest against oppression, discrimination, and harmful policies.
