Trauma doesn’t stay in the past, it can shape the way we experience trust, conflict, intimacy, and connection in our relationships. This blog explores common ways trauma can influence relationship patterns, explains why these responses are rooted in the nervous system rather than personal weakness, and highlights how trauma-informed therapy can help people build healthier, more secure relationships.

We love opportunities to keep learning and growing so we can provide the best care possible for our clients.

This week, our team had the privilege of welcoming Dr. Parker from Rooted Self Psychology for a training on neuroaffirming care. We explored diagnostic traits of autism and discussed how autistic traits can present differently across diverse populations, helping us recognize and better support individuals whose experiences have historically been overlooked or misunderstood.

Learning doesn’t stop after graduate school. Continuing education allows us to provide care that is thoughtful, inclusive, and affirming for every client who walks through our doors.

Thank you, Dr. Parker, for sharing your expertise with our team!

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, but it’s also a reminder that healing doesn’t happen the moment oppression ends.

In mental health, we understand that trauma can have lasting effects on individuals, families, and entire communities. The legacy of slavery, racism, and systemic inequity continues to impact mental health today through chronic stress, barriers to care, and intergenerational trauma.

Juneteenth invites us to celebrate resilience and joy while also acknowledging the importance of healing. Both can exist at the same time.

As we honor this day, we recognize that mental health is not just about individual well-being, it’s also shaped by history, community, and the conditions that allow people to feel safe, valued, and free.

When we talk about PTSD, we often focus on the trauma itself.

But PTSD is really about what happens when the body’s survival system never gets the message that the danger has passed.

Your autonomic nervous system is designed to keep you alive. When it detects a threat, it automatically shifts into survival mode: fight, flight, freeze, fawn, or other protective responses. During trauma, this system does exactly what it’s supposed to do.

The problem is that sometimes the nervous system stays stuck there.

What looks like anxiety may be a nervous system constantly scanning for danger.
What looks like avoidance may be a nervous system trying to stay safe.
What looks like irritability may be a nervous system running on high alert.
What looks like shutting down may be a nervous system that has learned overwhelm is too much to handle.

These aren’t signs of weakness. They’re signs that your body adapted to survive.

PTSD Awareness Month is a reminder that trauma isn’t just something that happened in the past. It’s something that can continue to live in the nervous system long after the event is over.

Healing isn’t about “getting over it.”

It’s about helping the mind and body learn what safety feels like again.

Summer is supposed to be the “happy” season... right?

Not always.

While summer can bring sunshine, vacations, and fun activities, it can also bring:

• Increased stress from schedule changes
• Financial pressure from travel and childcare
• Social comparison and FOMO
• Body image concerns
• Burnout from trying to do it all

If you’ve been feeling more overwhelmed, anxious, lonely, or emotionally drained this summer, you’re not the only one.

Mental health challenges don’t disappear when the weather gets warmer.

Our newest blog explores why summer can be difficult for mental health and offers practical ways to support your well-being throughout the season.
