Why is the relationship between a PT and their patient so important? Here’s what our clinicians say. 👇

It starts with a simple idea: you are the expert on your own life.
Your PT brings the clinical expertise. You bring your experience, your goals, your challenges, and your priorities. And together, you figure out what comes next.

That’s why a physical therapy evaluation is about more than checking a box. It’s where your PT learns what you’re dealing with, what matters most to you, and what you want to get back to.

It’s also a big part of why PT involves more than exercise: the plan is built with you, not handed to you.

Curious what it’s really like to be a physical therapist? Hear it straight from the people who do it every day. 💛

“I like personally making a difference in people’s lives. The ability to get someone go from ‘I can barely walk to the car’ to ‘I’m on the ground playing with my grandkids’… And having that huge & positive change in someones life is super empowering.” - Jacob DuVall, PT

TMD isn’t just jaw pain. It can show up as ear ringing, tooth pain, even headaches.

Temporomandibular Disorders, also known as TMJ dysfunction, can be a tricky beast. Many people don’t recognize the symptoms — from jaw pain, clicking, popping, and locking, into unexpected issues like ear pain, tooth sensitivity, and frequent headaches. These seemingly unrelated symptoms may all be connected to the jaw, and TMJ physical therapy can help uncover and treat the root cause.

Understanding the link between TMD and ear, teeth and headache symptoms is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective management.

Read the full guide, and if any of this sounds familiar, book a visit. No referral needed.

TMJ Self Release 💥

Jaw clicking, ear pain, or headaches that won’t quit?

Here’s how to perform a TMJ Self Release 👇🏽

Start by washing your hands or putting on a glove.
1. Using your thumb, place it inside your mouth along the back of your jaw, near your back molars.

2. Place your index or middle finger on the outside of your jaw so that your thumb and finger are gently pinching the tissue between them, like you’re gently pinching playdough.

3. Gently press your thumb and finger together and glide both fingers down toward the bottom of your jaw.

4. Next, gently glide your thumb and finger along your cheekbone, moving toward your nose.

5. Throughout the technique, keep your tongue resting on the roof of your mouth and make sure you’re not squeezing too hard.

Do you have more questions or want to get to the bottom of your pain? Reach out and schedule an appointment with our TMD specialist now!

Meet our crew!
As a military dependent, Christy was fortunate to grow up living all over the country, including places like Virginia, Tennessee, and California, as well as living overseas in Germany. This unique experience influenced her in many ways, including her desire to travel early in her professional career. Happily trading in the nomadic lifestyle for family, Christy has called Oregon home now for 14 years.

She graduated with a BS in Physical Therapy from the University of Tennessee. She then pursued and has maintained her Orthopedic Certified Specialist designation while working alongside the renowned Steadman Clinic physicians in Vail, Colorado and at OHSU in Portland, OR. She has extensive experience with shoulder, hip, and knee, and spine issues. Christy enjoys collaborating with her patients to achieve their individual goals, utilizing a personalized treatment plan that may include manual and exercise therapies, including Maitland, Graston, and Pilates and strength training techniques.

When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family hiking, skiing, singing, and…traveling!

04/02/2026

Some exercises that can help with the treatment of patellofemoral pain include supported step downs, lateral banded walks, and squats. Many people with patellofemoral pain have difficulty walking down stairs, but supported step downs train eccentric quad strength and allow people to re-load the aggregated quad muscle or tendon in a manageable way. The hand support will take some weight off of your leg so that all of the force from your body is not going through your anterior knee. Over time you can fade the amount of hand support you are using and this will make going down stairs easier. Lateral banded walks target the hip abductor muscles which can also contribute to patellofemoral pain by changing your body mechanics. If you have weak hip abductors then your knee is more likely to cave in and contribute to your knee pain. Squats target both the quads and the glutes which are both very important to strengthen in many people with patellofemoral pain.
