Lately, I’ve realized because of the changes in midlife (and in my case the dis-ease), the relationship with our body deserves just as much attention when it comes to the subject of self-love.

I’m learning to replace “What’s wrong with me?” with “Thank you for everything you’re doing for me.”

That’s been a difficult but pretty profound shift.

I’m sharing a suggestion and it’s a little practice I’m working on too:
The next time you catch yourself criticizing your body, pause and express/say 3 things you appreciate about it instead.

Not how it looks.

What it does.
What it’s carried you through.
What it’s protected you from.
What it still allows you to experience.

Maybe loving ourselves also means learning to be a little kinder to the body that’s been carrying us through all of it. ❤️

For years, I thought strength meant holding everything together.

Now I think strength also looks like creating enough safety to let yourself feel.

Some emotions don’t need to be solved.

They just need somewhere safe to land.

I love my husband. I also love when he chews quietly. Both things can be true. 😂

This breathing techniques helps to gently relieve inner anger felt in the chest and heart center. Practice it for 3-5 minutes every day for a compounded, lasting effect of patience and equanimity.

Perimenopause has introduced me to several new definitions of “running hot.” 😂

Sometimes it’s a hot flash.

Sometimes it’s irritation, impatience, or feeling like my internal thermostat (emotional or otherwise) has gone completely rogue.

Sitali is one of the practices I reach for when I need to cool things down a bit.

Because sometimes self-care looks like giving yourself a minute before the heat makes the decisions for you.

Try it and tell me what you notice. ❤️

May we all reclaim a little bit of the girl we were before we learned to edit ourselves.

The girl who felt safe taking up space.

Who expressed herself without wondering who was watching.

Who didn’t worry about being too loud, too much, or an inconvenience.

Who simply trusted that there was room for her in the world exactly as she was.

May we find our way back to her. ❤️

We spend years learning how to understand the world around us. Imagine what could change if we spent even a fraction of that time learning to understand the world within us. That’s the beginning of somatic literacy.

These two words are often confused but they lead to different kinds of healing. Self-love changes your relationship with yourself. Self-worth changes the standards you live by. You deserve both.

Have you ever noticed it’s easier to care for everyone else than it is to let someone care for you?

There’s often a reason for that.

Many of us learned how to give love long before we learned how to receive it.

Over time, we become comfortable being needed... but uncomfortable being nurtured.

One reason this happens is something psychologists call Parentification which is when a child takes on the emotional or physical responsibilities of caring for a parent or siblings long before they’re developmentally ready. Over time, that role can make giving feel familiar... and receiving feel deeply uncomfortable.
Repairing this means learning self-love.

Not just how much love you have to give but how willing you are to receive it.

Because when receiving love feels unfamiliar, it’s easy to overgive, overfunction, or believe you have to earn the care you’re longing for.

Learning to receive doesn’t make you selfish.

It helps restore balance to the relationship you have with yourself and with the people who love you.

Psychology often describes self-love through self-acceptance, self-compassion, and self-care.

I agree with all of that.

And I’ve found another way to recognize it.

To me, self-love is the relationship you have with yourself.

It’s your inner dialogue.

It’s whether you enjoy your own company.

It’s whether you appreciate who you are when no one else is around.

Because until you can enjoy being with yourself, it’s easy to make other people responsible for your sense of belonging.

And that’s where people-pleasing, overgiving, and abandoning your own needs often begin.

One of the most liberating moments is in realizing that your inner critic isn’t your voice, it’s that of your past programming.

It’s the voice of old conditioning.
The beliefs you absorbed.
The messages you received about who you (thought) you had to be to feel loved, accepted, or enough.

Just because you’ve repeated those thoughts for years doesn’t make them true.

Healing begins when you recognize the difference between your conditioning and your authentic inner wisdom.

That’s where self-worth begins.
And from there, self-love has room to grow.
