Feel the shame response. Don’t run from it.

Because the guilt after the boundary is not a sign you did it wrong. It’s the sound of an old rule breaking.

See the difference?

Guilt is about what you did. You stole money from Mom’s purse, for example. You cheated on your partner. You made a move.

Shame is about who you are. You think you deserve punishment for bumping into a vase and breaking it. You feel shameful about your body size and believe you’re not worthy of romance. You didn’t “do” anything and yet you belief this harsh truth about you.

And when shame is in charge, your whole nervous system organizes around one job: don’t let anyone confirm it’s true. That would be a worst nightmare. Your wiring is desperate not to find out that this belief is true despite operating entirely like it is.

Confusing, right?

This week’s essay is about what that actually looks like in your body, your relationships, and the yes you say when you mean no.

Boogie over to Substack and give it a read.

Hey, people pleaser.

You’re not a pushover. You do it because your nervous system learned that keeping the peace was the only way to stay safe.

The shame underneath it is quieter than the behavior, and it’s running the whole show.

This week’s Homeplay is a breathing thing.

Daily for 30 seconds, 4x4 breath, 3 times through. How do ya like it?

She’s alive. You talk to her. And you wish she was different. It feels like mourning.

That’s ambiguous grief, and it deserves to be talked about.

Mom grief is next level painful.

Whether she’s still here and disappointing. Whether she’s gone and complicated. Whether you’re still waiting for something she never gave you.

This week’s assignment, should you choose to accept it:

Put your phone in another room for one hour. Not on do-not-disturb. Not face-down on the table. In another room.

Then notice what your hands do.

The reach is automatic. You will catch yourself reaching for nothing three or four times. Your hands have a habit your brain does not.

That’s the data.

You don’t have to do anything with the data. You are not fixing. You are collecting. This is what Homeplay is for. Noticing what your body does when you take one thing away.

If anything interesting comes up, report back. Or don’t. The assignment is the noticing.
