A single blood donation can make a lifesaving difference, and right now, it's needed more than ever.

The national blood supply dropped by nearly 25% in June, creating a critical shortage, especially for Type O-positive blood. Summer travel, school breaks and fewer donations have left hospitals with a growing gap between available blood and patient needs.

If you're able, please consider donating at an upcoming blood drive in your community. Every blood type is needed, and every donation helps ensure lifesaving blood is available for patients when they need it most.

CentraCare - Benson is hosting a blood drive on Monday, August 3, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., in the CentraCare - Benson Clinic conference room.

To register online for our blood drive visit https://www.redcrossblood.org/ and enter Sponsor Code: Benson Health.

All presenting donors will receive a $20 Amazon gift card by email.

Fall sports practices are quickly approaching! The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) requires all student athletes to have a sports physical completed every three years.

If you have a student athlete at home, now is the time to schedule a well-child visit and complete their sports physical before practices begin.

Call 320-843-2030 to schedule an appointment, or visit https://www.centracare.com/services/pediatrics/sports-physicals/ to learn how to schedule online.

Summer means more time outdoors and more chances to encounter wildlife. While rabies is rare, knowing what to do after an animal bite or other possible exposure and how to prevent exposure completely can protect your health.

Here are some things to know about rabies from our Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr. Lucio Minces:

๐‡๐จ๐ฐ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ซ๐š๐›๐ข๐ž๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐?
Rabies spreads through the saliva of an infected animal, usually from a bite or scratch. It can also spread if saliva gets into your eyes, nose, mouth or an open wound.

Not every animal bite is a rabies exposure, but every bite should be taken seriously. In Minnesota, bats and skunks are the primary wild animals that carry rabies, but many other wild animals can carry the disease, like racoons. Humans can also be exposed through pets who have contracted the disease.

๐“๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ค ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ'๐ฏ๐ž ๐›๐ž๐ž๐ง ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž๐?
Wash the area with soap and water right away and seek medical care as soon as possible. If it can be done safely, identify or contain the animal for testing, but never put yourself at risk.

Vaccinate your pets.
โ€ข Don't touch or feed wild animals.
โ€ข Teach children to avoid unfamiliar animals.
โ€ข Be especially cautious around bats, even if you're unsure whether contact occurred (this includes finding a bat in the house after you were sleeping).

The best protection against rabies is preventing exposure in the first place. If you think you've been exposed, don't wait to seek medical advice. Contact the Minnesota Department of Health at 651-201-5414 for advice or contact your medical provider.

Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when it's found early.

If you're 45 or older, don't put off getting screened. A simple conversation with your primary care clinician can help you choose the option that's right for you.

It was another awesome Kid Day here in Benson!

Thank you to everyone who visited us here at CentraCare - Benson for our 2nd Annual Interactive Youth Medical Experience on Thursday, July 16! Participants explored the various hands-on healthcare activities from a variety of departments. They examined x-rays, sat in the lab chair to feel for veins, viewed blood samples under a microscope, learned about surgery and much more!

And thank you to our team members who represented CentraCare - Benson in the Kid Day parade on Saturday!
