BIG UPDATE: The president has signed the bipartisan spending package into law that includes a $100 million increase for Alzheimer’s and dementia research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and $41.5 million for implementation of the BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s Act at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in fiscal year 2026. 🎆

With the $100 million funding increase now finalized, the total annual federal investment in Alzheimer’s and dementia research will be approximately $3.9 billion.

The BOLD funding represents the highest annual investment since the law was enacted, strengthening the nation’s public health response to Alzheimer’s and other dementia in communities across the country.

This victory belongs to every advocate who raised their voice in support of this important investment. This wouldn’t have been possible without your dedication to the cause. 💜

BRRRRRRR! 🥶 Winter can be tough on all of us but especially on older adults as they often feel cold more easily. Staying warm is important for staying safe, healthy and comfortable. Here are a few simple, friendly tips to help seniors stay cozy all season:

• Layer Up: Wear comfy, warm clothes in layers. Add hats, scarves and gloves when heading outdoors.
• Keep the House Cozy: Set the thermostat to 68–70°F, close curtains at night and block drafts for extra warmth.
• Use Heaters Safely: Choose space heaters with safety features and never leave them on unattended. Electric blankets are great — just use them on low and turn off before sleep.
• Eat Warm Foods: Enjoy soups, oatmeal and hot drinks to help your body stay warm.
• Stay Active: Gentle exercises like stretching or walking around the house help boost circulation and warmth.
• Watch for Cold Signs: If you notice shivering, pale skin or confusion, warm up right away and call a doctor if needed.
• Be Careful Outside: Dress warmly, wear sturdy shoes and avoid icy areas. Ask for help with errands if needed.
• Get Help: Caregivers can assist with dressing, meals, safe heating and outings.

Holiday visits are a special time to connect with your older loved ones and check in on their well-being. While enjoying your time together, be sure to look for any changes in their home, daily routines or mood. Simple things to look for include:

• Is the house safe and tidy? Are there any signs of neglect or clutter?
• Is there enough fresh food? Has your loved one lost weight or missed meals?
• Has their social activity changed? Are they withdrawing from hobbies or friends?
• Do they seem more forgetful, confused or down than before?
• Are they keeping up with personal hygiene and dressing as usual?
• Do you notice unexplained bruises or signs of falls?

Noticing these signs can help you decide if your loved one needs more support to stay safe and comfortable at home. By staying attentive, keeping open conversations, and reaching out for resources when needed, you can help them feel cared for and supported during this stage of life.
