The future of our communities will be shaped by collaboration across education, health care, business, and innovation.

At Bentonville Schools' 2026 Convocation, Heartland Whole Health Institute President Claude Pirtle, MD, MBA, MSACI joined David Mazyck, PhD, president of the future STEM-focused university in Bentonville, and Marsha Wadsworth of Walmart for a thought-provoking panel discussion moderated by Debbie Jones, Superintendent for Bentonville Schools.

Together, they explored how education, whole health, technology, and workforce development can work in concert to help the next generation thrive.

Throughout the conversation, Dr. Pirtle emphasized a simple but powerful idea: whether in health care or education, our responsibility is not only to address challenges, but to create the conditions that help people flourish.

Thank you, Bentonville Schools, for fostering an important dialogue about the future of learning, well-being, and opportunity in Northwest Arkansas.

Better health starts with seeing the whole person.

A whole-health approach recognizes that physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being are deeply connected, and that lasting health outcomes depend on addressing the needs of the whole person — not just a single condition.

Heartland Whole Health Institute works with partners to advance whole-person health and help transform how health and well-being are supported.

The need for innovative workforce solutions has never been greater. More than one-third of Arkansans live in health professional shortage areas, limiting access to care today.

Residency programs are one of the most effective ways to strengthen recruitment, stabilize staffing, and improve outcomes, especially in rural and behavioral health care.

As Michael Givens, MBA, FACHE, St. Bernards Medical Center, emphasizes, with the right support, more communities can act. The GME Technical Assistance Center helps organizations build programs aligned with real workforce needs.

Interest in residency programs is growing, but the path forward remains complex. Arkansas is training more than 430 medical graduates each year, but out of 1,281 total GME positions in the state only 375 residency positions exist, creating a critical bottleneck.

As Debbie Ackerson, Boston Mountain Rural Health Center, says, turning interest into action requires expertise, alignment, and operational support. The GME Technical Assistance Center is designed to help organizations assess feasibility, navigate accreditation, and move forward with confidence.

Chronic disease is reshaping life across the Heartland — but we have a real opportunity to change the trajectory. A recent article by Claude Pirtle, MD, MBA, MSACI, President, Heartland Whole Health Institute, in Heartland Forward explores four shifts that can transform how long-term, whole-person care is delivered across the region:

- Payment models rewarding better health outcomes and make prevention sustainable.
- Technology extending care beyond the clinic through telehealth and remote monitoring.
- A strengthened workforce equipped with Community Health Workers, navigators, pharmacists, and advanced practitioners.
- Early prevention aligning incentives, so evidence-based interventions reach people quicker.

These shifts are practical, scalable, and within reach when states work together.
