Excellent podcast episode about how the culture of labor and delivery units can shape decision-making and influence the birth experience for families. Give this a listen and ask your doula about the different hospital cultures/practices in our region.

Most people choose a doctor first, and then give birth at the hospital where that doctor has privileges. With the rare exception, I prefer the opposite order: decide which HOSPITAL you want to deliver at, then choose the provider who is the best fit that works there.

Ask me why in the comments if you'd like to know.

"Community-based doulas...are trusted neighbors, advocates, educators, and connectors. They know what it means when a mother lives two hours from the nearest hospital. They understand the stress of finding child care before labor begins. They recognize when a woman may need emotional support just as much as medical support."

-- Liyah Wasson, Co-founder and Executive Director of the Doula Alliance of Arkansas writing for the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

Our big congratulations to Sylvia Halliburton for becoming the first person to complete Arkansas' new community-based doula certification process. While doulas like Sylvia have long been working to support mothers and infants in Arkansas, this marks a significant shift in the state's investment in maternal health through certification recognition and reimbursement for doula services by Medicaid and private insurance. As Liyah aptly points out, there is still work to be done to ensure rates are sustainable and the workforce is properly supported. Those of us who work in maternal health know this is a marathon -- and we have BEEN TRAINING!

Incredibly grateful and 🔥 fired up🔥after experiencing the power of The Ebony Canal at Bentonville Film Festival. What an honor to share space with gifted storytellers, maternal health champions, and phenomenal Black women who are the very lifeblood of this movement. …………………………………………………………………. Meeting and talking with Charles from 4Kira4moms was EVERYTHING! I absolutely geeked out. He was so gracious and genuine. His relentless pursuit of birth equity is the most inspiring mission I’ve ever seen. ………………………………………………………………….. I love being a doula. We have two doulas participating in the pilot co-hort of this toolkit at Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas. So grateful to contribute to this collaboration to improve maternal healthcare in our region. Doulas, nurses, doctors, midwives, policy makers and facilitators -- we all bring different skills to the table; and developing relationships of trust is ESSENTIAL to moving the needle in this crisis.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Institute for Community Health Innovation recently launched the Advancing Doulas and Perinatal Teams (ADAPT) Toolkit, an innovative resource designed to improve maternal health by strengthening collaboration between doulas and clinical care team...

The removal of children from Indigenous Peoples is a horrific practice with a long-standing history in our country as well. You cannot be “pro-family” without also being intentionally ant-racist.
