So, when is it appropriate or ideal to use Heating Pads? And when to use Cold Packs?
Almost always, Patients that comes in the office presenting an injury whether it be an acute or chronic, they ask the question : What should I use?
Use ice immediately after an acute injury (within the first 24–48 hours) to reduce swelling and Pain ( Earliest recorded usage -Edwin Smith Papyrus in 3500 B.C). Heating pads are best used for injuries 48 to 72 hours after the initial injury, once acute swelling and inflammation have subsided. ( Earliest use: Greek physician Hippocrates (circa 460–370 BC)).
Cryotherapy and Thermotherapy are beneficial if used at the right time ( stage of injury or healing), on the right Place ( on or around the injured tissue. or opposite extremity), right duration ( length of exposure) the right intensity ( Hotness or coldness) and the right Diagnosis ( Some Neurological condition are not compatible to Heat). These are just one of the things we can discuss while getting a one-on-one and Hands-On treatment from our Licensed Physical Therapist. We look forward to seeing you.
