This Sunday, Hamilton on Broadway is doing something it has never done before.
For the first time in the show’s history, Hamilton is hosting a TDF Autism Friendly Performance — a special 1pm show at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on May 31 designed specifically for autistic audiences, their families, and anyone with sensory or communication differences.
Here’s what makes it different from a regular performance.
Jarring sounds are reduced. Strobe lights and spotlights that shine into the audience are adjusted. The lobby has staffed break areas where anyone who needs a moment can step away without missing everything. The entire audience understands — because they’re all there for the same reason.
TDF has been running Autism Friendly Performances on Broadway since 2011, when they launched the program with The Lion King. In the 14 years since, they’ve brought sensory-friendly performances of Hamilton, Wicked, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, MJ The Musical, and dozens more to autistic audiences who had previously been shut out of live theatre entirely.
This season alone — nine productions. The most TDF has ever offered in a single season.
Sunday’s Hamilton show is already sold out. But if you want to be added to the waiting list you can on the Tsar website.
And if you’ve never been able to take your child to a Broadway show because of sensory overwhelm — this program exists for you. It has existed for 15 years. Share this so more families know.
