LifeLong has seen a lot in 50 years. From the social justice movements of the 1970s that created our first health center, through a worldwide pandemic, to the current digital revolution, healthcare has evolved – and LifeLong with it, often leading the way. Keep reading here for milestones in our half-century of compassionate care.

2023 to present

In 2023, we graduated our first Family Medicine Residency class, an investment in the next generation of physicians as the future of community-based primary care. Several of the doctors in the two classes that have graduated since are making their careers at LifeLong and others are practicing community medicine in other parts of the country.

Responding to increasing needs in Berkeley, in 2025 LifeLong opened the Berkeley Trust Health Center.

In 2026, LifeLong celebrates 50 years of compassionate care, beginning with a simple principle espoused by the Gray Panthers in 1976: That everyone, regardless of life circumstances, has a right to healthcare.

As LifeLong Medical Care marks 50 years of compassionate care, our CEO John Jenkins joined a new podcast episode from for Community Health to reflect on the legacy of community health centers and the future ahead.

The conversation explores lessons passed down from his father, Dr. William Jenkins, the evolution of community healthcare over the last five decades, and the urgent challenges and opportunities facing health centers today. John also reflects on influential leaders who shaped both him and the broader community health movement, including Dr. Lenoir, Miss Flores, Marty Lynch, and James Jackson.

May is High Blood Pressure Education Month, a reminder of how important it is to know your numbers and take steps toward heart health.

LifeLong’s Heart to Heart (H2H) program is built on the idea that strong community connections lead to better health. By meeting people where they are, H2H helps prevent high blood pressure and heart disease while connecting community members to the resources and care they need.

Across Berkeley and parts of Oakland, our team is out in the community providing free blood pressure screenings and building relationships that support long term health.

Here is what that impact looks like in action:

🩷562 blood pressure screenings completed last quarter (January 1 to March 31, 2026)

🩷126 screenings so far this quarter since April 1

🩷69 screenings in one day at our recent Cinco de Mayo event

Each screening is an opportunity to connect, educate, catch potential health concerns early, and support individuals on their unique health journey.

We are proud to serve Alameda County as a bridge between community members and care -- and to build healthier neighborhoods one conversation at a time.
