Hi, I’m Sarah Joy and I’m a student in UC Berkeley’s Online Master of Public Health program concentrating in Health Policy and Management. 🐻

I never thought I would work in healthcare let alone study it. During my undergraduate studies I focused on theatre and ethnomusicology. After college I traveled extensively before ending up in rural Northern California where I stumbled upon a job at the local Federally Qualified Health Center where I was also a patient.

In the past nine years I have slowly risen in the ranks and am now a Director and part of the Executive Leadership Team. Last year my CEO suggested this program alongside the Rural Health Innovation fellowship as something I may be interested in.

I want to do my part to bend the arc of history toward circumstances that provide better outcomes to my community and rural populations overall. Berkeley is helping me do exactly that. 🐻

UC Berkeley Public Health is recruiting California subjects for a study on indoor cooking and air pollution and their impact on health. The study, led by Assistant Professor of Environmental Health Sciences Misbath Daouda, focuses on California residents living in multi-unit housing who cook at home several times a week. The research is funded by the California Energy Commission and conducted in partnership with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Central California Asthma Collective, and the Association for Energy Affordability.

Huge congratulations to Professor William Jagust, M.D., on receiving the prestigious Henry Wisniewski, M.D. Lifetime Achievement Award at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference ! 🧠🎖️Dr. Jagust is professor emeritus of public health and neuroscience at UC Berkeley.

Presented by the Alzheimer’s Association, this honor recognizes scientific pioneers whose groundbreaking work accelerates progress across Alzheimer’s research, treatment, and care.

Dr. Jagust has fundamentally transformed how we understand molecular neuroimaging. His research helped establish amyloid and tau PET scans as essential tools for defining disease biology long before clinical symptoms even emerge—insights that have completely reshaped modern clinical trial design.

Can partnering with local community organizations help close the vaccine equity gap? A new study led by UC Berkeley Associate Professor of Health Policy and Management Amanda Brewster found that nearly 70% of vaccination events hosted by community partners successfully reached historically undervaccinated populations.

Key drivers included practical strategies like offering gift cards, pairing shots with food assistance, and working with trusted neighborhood partners.

Hi I’m Patrick Arceaux, I’m a recent Berkeley MPH grad and I now run social media for the program. 🐻

I grew up in the San Gabriel Valley, spent years cooking professionally, and somehow ended up in public health. It made more sense than it sounds.

I’m a dad, I’m bilingual, and I care a lot about food, community, and the stories we tell about both. Berkeley gave me a way to make that mean something beyond the kitchen.

Now I get to tell the stories of the people in this program. It’s a pretty good job.

The University of California Board of Regents has appointed Jordan Roiland as the 2027–28 student regent! 🎓✨ Currently a student regent-designate, Roiland is making history as the first M.D. student to serve in this role in its 52-year history.

Roiland brings a background in public education, community health, and student advocacy to the Board, having earned his master's from UC Berkeley and currently pursuing his medical degree through the UC Berkeley–UCSF Joint Medical Program.

"I am humbled by the honor of representing the student perspective while working with the Board of Regents to support a UC that upholds our institutional vision and values," said Roiland.

Congratulations to Assistant Professor of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology Charles Whittaker, who has received a UC Berkeley Research Opportunity Program seed grant. 🌱 His project wil explore how climate change and expanding human activity could shape future pandemic risk.

His team will develop models that project where animal viruses are most likely to spill over into people and how outbreaks could spread around the world through 2100, helping identify where future preparedness efforts may be needed.

As the U.S. observes its 250th birthday, UC Berkeley celebrates its changemakers who shaped our nation—like UC Berkeley Public Health alumna Judith Heumann, MPH '75.

In the 1960s, Berkeley students fought for campus accessibility and independent living, sparking a national movement that ultimately inspired the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. Judy helped lead that revolutionary shift, and today’s advocates continue the vital work of defending access for all.
