Berkeley's School of Optometry is internationally recognized for its excellence in patient care as well as its leadership in vision research. Morgan University Eye Center is open to the public, as well as to the campus community of faculty, staff and students. The vision care needs of infants through the elderly are met. Doctors, working in our modern state-of-the-art facilities, can meet all of your vision care needs-from glasses and complete contact lens care to the specialized optometric and ophthalmological treatment of serious vision problems.

We are excited to welcome back our alumni community for the 2026 Alumni Reunion!

Join us on Saturday, September 19th from 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM at Almanac Adventureland and Brewery in Alameda.

While all alumni are warmly invited to attend, we look forward to raising a special toast to our milestone reunion classes: 1966, 1971, 1975, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021!

Come out for a wonderful afternoon exploring our new clinic, reconnecting with classmates, and shared camaraderie.

What does the world look like through an amblyopic eye? A new study from the Levi Lab explores how people with amblyopia perceive visual stimuli and why those differences may extend beyond reduced visual acuity.

Published in Vision Research, the paper was led by Postdoctoral Researcher Angela Tomaz, with co-authors Wolf Harmening, Dennis Levi, and Bilge Sayim.

Optometry students Kennedy Cofield and Monica Do were recognized at the 2026 National Optometric Association Convention in St. Louis.

Kennedy received the NOSA Executive Board Award and the Dr. Robert Johnson Pediatric and Vision Therapy Award, and Monica received the Dr. Marvin R. Poston Leadership Award through VSP.

Congratulations to Vision Science student and optometry alumna Sara Abboud (OD ’23) on receiving a prestigious K08 Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award from the National Eye Institute!

Dr. Abboud’s research in the Fleiszig Lab will examine how the cornea’s natural defenses may help protect against sight-threatening bacterial infections.

Congratulations to Professor Karthik Shekhar on receiving the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholars Award!

Dr. Shekhar is an Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. His research interests include the development of neural diversity, and the evolution of neural diversity.

The award honors early-career faculty in the chemical sciences who have created an outstanding independent body of scholarship and are deeply committed to education with undergraduates.

In case you missed it, from the latest issue of See Magazine: Berkeley researchers are advancing optogenetic vision therapy that could one day help restore light perception for people with retinal disease.

The approach uses light-sensitive proteins to help damaged retinas respond to light again, with promising studies now underway in dogs as researchers work toward future human trials.
