Stroke OT StrokeOT.org was developed to address healthcare disparities, including limited access to care and limited funding for care.

StrokeOT is nonprofit organization aimed at helping chronic stroke and acquired brain injury survivors learn to live healthy lifestyles and access stroke and brain injury recovery resources! The mission of StrokeOT.org is to serve community-based stroke and brain injury survivors by offering free, student-led occupational therapy groups on a secure Zoom platform to residents of Connecticut. My philosophy:
"I have worked with the stroke population for the past 26 years and find it to be the most fulfilling part of my job as an occupational therapist. Health insurance plans continue to reduce the number of therapy visits for my clients and high insurance deductibles and copays cause many clients to feel financial pressure. This website stemmed from a desire to assist people who are experiencing these health insurance disparities and to offer a long-term guide for the self-management of your stroke. Setting small daily and weekly goals is the key to improving your physical health and quality of life. My specialty areas in stroke rehabilitation include Neuro-developmental Treatment, the Lifestyle Redesign® model, Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy, and Saebo orthotics. I have been a clinical instructor for university students for the past 5 years. I am fortunate to have the assistance of occupational therapy students, Siobhan Kemple and Micaela Galley in building StrokeOT.org. Thank you Siobhan and Micaela for your dedication and contributions to our profession!" --Carolyn Brown, OTD, OTR/L

Part 4 of our vision series focuses on visual perceptual skills! It’s important to understand how vision and the brain work together. Vision is a lot more than just seeing - our brain has to process the information and this requires a variety of visual-cognitive skills!

🧠 Figure-Ground Discrimination
🧠 Form Constancy
🧠 Spatial Relations
🧠 Right-Left Discrimination
🧠 Depth Perception
🧠 Agnosia

Many of these visual perceptual skills can be affected after a stroke. What are some other ways visual perceptual deficits can affect function?

Part 3 of our vision series! It’s important to learn how to use your remaining vision in an effective manner with a visual field cut after a stroke. Strategies include:
👁️ Lighthouse scanning
👁️ Anchoring
👁️ Systematic scanning
👁️ Environmental modifications
👁️ Prism glasses

Stay tuned for more about vision changes and strategies after stroke!

Part 2 of our vision series! Visual field cuts occur in about 30% of stroke survivors. One might describe a field cut as a blind spot within the norma range of vision. Stroke survivors more commonly experience homonymous hemianopsia or quantrantopias where half or a quarter of their visual field is cut, respectively.

Check out our next post to learn about strategies for living with visual field cuts!

After having a stroke, survivors are given a lot of information, including lists of doctors to check in with and follow ups. Among those, can be recommendations to see a vision specialist for a stroke-related visual impairment.

Vision impairments can occur as a result of a stroke or brain injury. Common impairments include:

👁️ Acuity changes (clear vs. blurry vision)
👁️ Visual field changes or cuts
👁️ Oculomotor function (ability to move and control eyes and for eyes to work together)

You may have hear of an optometrist or an ophthalmologist, but after a stroke, it’s recommended to see neurological eye specialists to treat your stroke-related visual impairments.

Occupational therapists can help too! Whether it’s providing exercises for practicing eye movements and skills or compensatory strategies like adaptive equipment, OTs are well-equipped to assist.

Check out our infographic to learn more about the differences between typical and neurological eye specialists! 👀 👀 👀

HUGE thank you to Kim Downs, OTD for providing the research and information for our vision series!
