One of the very best parts of the work I do is watching someone go from feeling overwhelmed and alone in their health journey to finally feeling heard, supported, and hopeful. 💗

Reviews like this mean more to me than I can say.

Because at the end of the day, functional medicine isn’t just about labs, hormones, gut health, or finding root causes ...

It’s about the person sitting in front of us.

✨ Listening to her.
✨ Helping her understand her body.
✨ And making sure she knows she doesn’t have to figure it all out alone.

Celebrating this patient win today — and feeling incredibly grateful that I get to do this work. 🌿

P.S. I wouldn't be able to do this without my incredible team Tamsin & Kerry !

✨ Sunset from our front porch in North Carolina

I did enhance the photo, but this really IS our view.

A few months ago, my husband and I made the decision to downsize into a smaller mountain home as he prepares to retire this September. It has been a long-held dream, and somehow it still doesn't quite feel real.

Getting here wasn't exactly easy though.

Our move turned into a bit of a nightmare with our moving company, and there were moments when we wondered if we'd ever get settled. But standing on this porch reminds me that some dreams are worth fighting through.

Life has a funny way of holding both joy and hardship at the same time.

The difficult moments don't erase the beautiful ones—but if we're not careful, we can become so focused on what's going wrong that we miss the blessings quietly unfolding around us.

P.S. I'm still seeing patients via telehealth, so although my view has changed, my commitment to helping you hasn't. 🌿 🩷

Menopause humor hits a little differently when you're actually living it. 😉

But underneath the jokes is something I wish more women understood:

✨Our bodies really DO change in midlife.✨

▪️Shifting estrogen and progesterone can affect insulin sensitivity, body composition, appetite, sleep, mood, bone health and where we tend to store fat.

▪️At the same time, aging itself brings changes in muscle mass, metabolism and recovery.

▪️HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) can be an incredibly valuable tool for the right woman—but it isn't the whole answer.

And the answer isn't simply, “You're getting older. Accept it.” either.

There is a middle ground between fighting our bodies and giving up on them.

We can understand what's changing and become more intentional about what we can influence:

✨ • Build and protect muscle
✨ • Eat enough protein and nutrient-dense food
✨ • Support blood sugar and metabolic health
✨ • Walk, lift, move and stay active
✨ • Protect sleep and address chronic stress
✨ • Pay attention to thyroid, gut and overall health
✨ • Use HRT when appropriate as one part of a bigger health strategy

And then there's another piece we don't talk about enough:

Acceptance.

Acceptance doesn't mean believing weight gain, exhaustion or feeling lousy are simply inevitable.

And optimization doesn't mean spending the rest of our lives trying to force a mid-life body to behave—or look—exactly like it did at 30.

Maybe the better question is:

“My body has changed. What does this version of me need now?”

That's a very different relationship with aging.

▪️Learn what's changing.
▪️Support what you can.
▪️Let go of some of what you can't.

And give this version of your body the care it deserves.

And maybe avoid prolonged eye contact with the cheesecake. 😂

Healing begins with understanding. 🌿

🍄 Lion's Mane & Mood:
Can a mushroom really support emotional well-being?

Many people know Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) for its potential brain health benefits, but emerging research suggests it may also play a role in supporting mood, stress resilience, and emotional well-being.

Here's what the research suggests ⤵️

1️⃣ Supports Nerve Growth Factor (NGF)

Lion's Mane contains compounds called hericenones and erinacines that appear to stimulate production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), which supports the growth, repair, and survival of neurons. Healthier nerve cells may contribute to improved emotional regulation over time.

2️⃣ May Reduce Symptoms of Anxiety & Depression

A study of menopausal women found that four weeks of Lion's Mane was associated with improvements in anxiety, irritability, and depressive symptoms compared with placebo.

3️⃣ May Help Reduce Stress

A randomized placebo-controlled trial in healthy adults found four weeks of Lion's Mane reduced subjective stress and showed modest improvements in cognitive performance.

4️⃣ Supports Brain Health Through Multiple Pathways

Researchers believe Lion's Mane may support mood by encouraging neuroplasticity, reducing neuroinflammation, supporting healthy communication between brain cells, and potentially influencing the gut-brain axis.

🕵️‍♀️ What Does the Overall Evidence Say?

The research is promising—but still early. Most human studies have been relatively small, and larger, long-term clinical trials are needed.

Current evidence suggests Lion's Mane may be a helpful adjunct for supporting mood, stress resilience, and overall brain health, but it should not be viewed as a stand-alone treatment for depression or anxiety.

🕵️‍♀️ Functional Medicine Perspective

When someone struggles with a low mood, we don't simply ask, 'What supplement should I take?'

We ask:

• Is inflammation affecting the brain?
• Is blood sugar stable?
• Are hormones changing?
• Is the gut healthy?
• Are nutrient deficiencies contributing?
• Is chronic stress reshaping the nervous system?

👉 Lion's Mane may be one useful tool—but it works best as part of a comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of emotional health.

✨ "It feels like a veil has lifted."

Or...

💡 "It's like someone finally turned the light switch on."

These are comments I hear quite often from women after starting bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT).

As someone who personally uses BHRT—and has seen the difference it can make in many of my patients—I believe it can be a powerful tool ---> when it's the right fit.

But hormones don't work in isolation.
They function within the context of your entire body.
That's why I always emphasize the foundations first:

🌿 Nourish your body with quality nutrition
😴 Prioritize restorative sleep
🧘‍♀️ Manage stress & support your nervous system
💪 Move your body regularly
❤️ Address any root causes that may be contributing to your symptoms.

When these pieces come together, BHRT can be a true game changer for the right woman.

If you've been wondering whether bioidentical hormones might be appropriate for YOU, I've created a complimentary guide to help you better understand the benefits, considerations, and common questions.

Because healing begins with understanding. 🌿

🌷 We have this beautiful tulip in our yard that grows with this whimsical bend each year. What strikes me the most about it, isn't just the beauty of the flower itself, but the curve in the stem.

It doesn’t grow perfectly straight.
Instead, it bends and adapts, reaching toward the light.

And honestly… I think our healing often looks the same. 🩷

In a world that teaches us we can get everything in an instant; here is the unpopular truth - true healing is rarely quick.

Healing is a process. 🔄

Your body was beautifully designed with an incredible ability to heal, adapt, and restore balance.

In physiology, we call this homeostasis — the body’s natural tendency to maintain internal balance despite the constant changes and stressors of life.

But homeostasis does not mean your body remains perfectly stable all the time.

---> True health is not rigidity.
---> It is adaptability.

👉 So, you believe you have a thyroid issue and ask your doctor for a test.

👉 They perform a TSH blood test, and everything comes back “normal”.

👉 You’re left feeling confused, unheard, and not sure where to turn next.

The truth is, thyroid health is complex, and a single test often isn't enough to give a full picture.

Here are the thyroid tests that we most commonly check when evaluating thyroid function and what they each reveal:

1️⃣ TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone):
TSH measures the hormone that signals your thyroid to produce hormones. However, a "normal" TSH level doesn't always mean your thyroid is functioning properly, as it doesn't measure thyroid hormones directly.

2️⃣ Free T4 (Thyroxine):
Free T4 measures the unbound, active form of thyroxine in your blood. It helps determine how much thyroid hormone is available, indicating whether your thyroid is underactive or overactive.

3️⃣ Free T3 (Triiodothyronine):
Free T3 measures the active thyroid hormone triiodothyronine, which directly influences metabolism. Low levels can indicate issues with hormone conversion or cellular uptake.

4️⃣ Reverse T3 (rT3):
Reverse T3 is an inactive form of T3, often elevated due to stress or illness. Testing rT3 helps determine if your body is converting T4 into active T3 or the inactive form, which can slow metabolism.

5️⃣ Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOAb):
This test measures antibodies against thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme vital for hormone production. High TPOAb levels suggest an autoimmune response, commonly seen in Hashimoto's.

6️⃣ Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TgAb):
TgAb measures antibodies against thyroglobulin, a protein produced by the thyroid. High TgAb levels can indicate autoimmune thyroid disorders and are used to diagnose and monitor these conditions.

✴️ Additional markers to consider when evaluating thyroid health:

- Liver enzymes
- HbA1c
- Fasting Insulin
- Nutrient Markers such as iron, iodine, zinc and Vitamin D.

✴️ Women are more likely to suffer from thyroid conditions especially between the ages of 30 - 60.

✴️ Common symptoms can include:

▪️fatigue
▪️hair shedding
▪️dry skin
▪️unwanted weight gain (or loss)
▪️elevated cholesterol
▪️poor temperature regulation
▪️constipation

✨Hormones don't operate in isolation.

They are influenced by the health of the entire body—including:

▪️blood sugar regulation
▪️gut health
▪️nutrient status
▪️inflammation
▪️stress physiology
▪️sleep quality
▪️liver function
▪️metabolic health & body composition

This is why I don't view hormone therapy as an "either/or" conversation.

Hormones work best when we remember they are part of a much larger physiological orchestra.

🧩 Hormones are one piece of the puzzle—not the whole picture. 🧩

If we focus only on replacing hormones without asking why the body is struggling, we may miss important opportunities to improve the environment in which those hormones are working.

A root-cause, functional approach to healing encourages us to ask deeper questions. Not only: "What hormone is changing?"

But also: ⤵️

"What is happening within this woman's physiology that is influencing how she experiences this transition?

We work with each woman to create an internal environment where every system—including hormones—can function more effectively.

✨The goal isn't simply to optimize hormones. The goal is to optimize the whole person.✨

✨ Hormones in the News: Estrogen & Brain Health

For years, estrogen was viewed primarily as a reproductive hormone. But emerging research continues to reveal something much bigger:
👉 Estrogen plays a critical role in brain health.

Researchers are finding that estrogen influences:

🧠 Memory & learning
🧠 Mood & emotional regulation
🧠 Brain energy production
🧠 Nerve cell communication
🧠 Protection against inflammation & oxidative stress
🧠 Blood flow to the brain

This may help explain why so many women notice changes in memory, focus, word recall, motivation, sleep, and mood during the menopause transition.

What the Research is Showing 🔎

▪️Recent studies suggest that the decline in estrogen during perimenopause and menopause can contribute to changes in brain metabolism and function.

▪️Some researchers describe menopause as a “neurological transition” rather than simply a reproductive one.

▪️This doesn’t mean menopause causes dementia.
It does mean that the hormonal shifts occurring during this stage of life can influence how the brain functions and how a woman feels on a day-to-day basis.

Many women report:

• Brain fog
• Difficulty concentrating
• Forgetting names or words
• Reduced mental stamina
• Increased anxiety
• Changes in sleep quality

If you’ve experienced these symptoms, you’re not imagining them—and you’re certainly not alone.

Our Functional Medicine Perspective 🔎

We view hormones as part of a much larger conversation. While estrogen is important, brain health is influenced by many interconnected systems, including:

✓ Blood sugar balance
✓ Sleep quality
✓ Stress and cortisol patterns
✓ Inflammation
✓ Gut health
✓ Nutrient status
✓ Thyroid function
✓ Exercise and muscle health
✓ Social connection and purpose

When one or more of these systems become dysregulated, symptoms often become more noticeable during periods of hormonal change.

What This Means for You 🔎

▪️The goal isn’t simply to just “replace estrogen.”
▪️The goal is to understand what YOUR body needs to thrive during this transition.
▪️For some women, bioidentical hormone therapy may be an appropriate piece of the puzzle.
▪️For others, addressing sleep, insulin resistance, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, thyroid function, or chronic stress may have an equally significant impact on how they feel and function.

✨ Healing Begins with Understanding ✨

If you’ve noticed changes in memory, focus, mood, or mental clarity, don’t dismiss them as simply “getting older.”

Your brain is talking to you.

Understanding the underlying factors—including hormonal changes—may be the first step toward supporting long-term brain health and helping you feel like yourself again.
