Heartburn is one of the common complaints I see in my office. For some, it appears occasionally after a heavy meal. For others, it becomes a chronic problem that disrupts sleep, limits food choices, and reduces quality of life.

While antacids and acid-reducing medications can provide temporary relief, many people seek a more holistic approach that addresses the underlying factors contributing to reflux. Acupuncture, a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has gained increasing attention for its ability to help regulate digestive function, reduce stress, and improve symptoms associated with heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

One of the most common questions people ask before trying acupuncture is: "Isn't it just a placebo?"

One of the stories I like to tell about this is when my former dog received acupuncture for a strained ligament after chasing a coyote in the woods. I brought her to a veterinary acupuncturist who examined her the way I would. Listened to her pulse, felt around her paw, checked her range of motion, then began to do acupuncture on her. She was incredibly calm not only during the session, but hopped in the car like nothing had happened and then proceeded to sleep 14 hours straight! She didn’t even get up for chicken! She was healed in one session. This really proved to me that acupuncture isn’t just the placebo effect because what do dogs know about placebo? It’s real science.

For decades, researchers have worked to determine whether acupuncture's benefits are simply the result of expectation, or whether measurable biological changes occur when acupuncture needles stimulate the body.

Today, a growing body of scientific evidence suggests that acupuncture is much more than a placebo effect. Modern imaging studies, neurobiology research, and large clinical trials have demonstrated that acupuncture can activate the nervous system, influence immune function, regulate pain pathways, and produce measurable physiological changes.

Have you ever felt sluggish, heavy, bloated, or mentally foggy, even after getting enough sleep? Do you wake up feeling tired, struggle with water retention, or notice that your digestion never seems quite right?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), these symptoms are often associated with a pattern known as Internal Dampness. Rather than referring to moisture inside the body in the literal sense, Dampness describes an imbalance in the body's ability to properly transform, transport, and eliminate fluids. Got bloat? This is what we’re talking about.
While Internal Dampness is not a diagnosis recognized in conventional medicine, many of its associated symptoms overlap with conditions involving sluggish digestion, chronic inflammation, edema, and metabolic dysfunction. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine aim to correct these functional imbalances by supporting the body's natural regulatory systems.

What exactly is happening when you are stressed? I’ve often wondered why some of my patients are more stressed out than others. The external factors can vary greatly, but one person’s stress response to a minor stressor can feel catastrophic compared to others.
Stress is often thought of as an emotional experience, but its effects extend far beyond the mind. Chronic stress can alter brain function, disrupt the nervous system, and trigger widespread inflammation throughout the body. Over time, this persistent inflammatory state has been linked to chronic pain, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, depression, diabetes, and many other health conditions.
For thousands of years, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has viewed acupuncture as a way to restore balance within the body. Today, modern neuroscience is beginning to uncover how this ancient therapy interacts with the nervous system. One of the most exciting discoveries comes from researchers at Harvard Medical School, who identified specific neurons that allow electro-acupuncture to activate powerful anti-inflammatory pathways. Their findings provide a biological explanation for how acupuncture may influence the body's response to inflammation. While these mechanistic studies were conducted in mice, they offer valuable insight into how acupuncture affects the nervous system and continue to guide human research.

Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints I see in my acupuncture practice. Whether it develops from poor posture, prolonged computer use, stress, arthritis, or an injury, neck pain can significantly interfere with daily life. It often limits movement, causes headaches, referred pain down the arm and disturbs sleep.
While medications and physical therapy remain common treatment options, many patients are turning to electro-acupuncture, an advanced form of acupuncture that combines ancient healing principles with modern technology.

Many of my patients have been traveling this month and others are planning trips. Whether you're flying across the country or halfway around the world, travel can be exciting, but jet lag can quickly take the enjoyment out of your trip. Fatigue, brain fog, digestive upset, poor sleep, and difficulty concentrating are common complaints after crossing multiple time zones.
While many travelers rely on caffeine or sleep aids to get through the adjustment period, acupuncture offers a natural way to help your body adapt more quickly and restore balance to your internal clock. Especially when you return home.
From both a modern medical and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, jet lag is more than simple tiredness—it's a disruption of the body's natural rhythms.

Struggling with jet lag after travel? Learn how acupuncture helps reset your internal clock, improve sleep, reduce fatigue, and support faster recovery after crossing time zones.

One of the first questions patients ask is
“How many acupuncture sessions will I need before I feel better?”

It’s a fair question—but the honest answer is: it depends.

Acupuncture isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment. The number of sessions you need depends on your condition, how long you’ve had it, and how your body responds to treatment.

That said, there are clear patterns that can help set realistic expectations.
