SFA’s mission is to improve outcomes for people diagnosed with sarcoma to increase the number of survivors. We do this by funding and advancing research, educating and providing resources for people diagnosed with sarcoma, advocating on behalf of the sarcoma community, bringing together the collective sarcoma voice, and growing awareness about the disease.

This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Maria shares her daughter Aubrie’s story.

Childhood sarcoma impacts more than the child diagnosed. It affects families and loved ones, too. By sharing Aubrie’s story, Maria raises awareness of childhood sarcoma and continues to advocate for better outcomes for other children and families affected by the disease.

We are heartbroken to share the passing of our colleague, friend, and fierce sarcoma advocate, Katie Wintergerst.

Katie dedicated her life to supporting the sarcoma community. Before joining the Sarcoma Foundation of America staff, she was a founding member of the Louisville Race to Cure Sarcoma, serving as Co-Chair for many years. She was a Courage Award Honoree at the 2023 Stand Up to Sarcoma Gala and participated in advocacy days on behalf of SFA and the broader sarcoma community. She raised awareness in her area, often appearing on local television stations, shared her story on SFA's Sarcoma Stories podcast, and helped build and strengthen her local sarcoma community.

As SFA’s Director of Engagement and Advocacy, Katie touched countless lives. She became the lead for SFA's Sarcoma Match mentor program, co-hosted the Sarcoma Stories podcast, and provided support and guidance to individuals navigating their sarcoma journeys.
Even as she faced her own health challenges, Katie continued advocating for others until just days before her passing. Her compassion, courage, and commitment to putting people first will leave a lasting legacy within the sarcoma community.

We will miss her deeply and are honored to carry her legacy forward.

We are excited to honor Shreyaskumar R. Patel, MD, with the Nobility in Science Award for his decades of dedication to sarcoma research, treatment, and the broader sarcoma community.

As Medical Director of the Sarcoma Center at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Dr. Patel has helped advance treatments for sarcoma and has been a longtime leader in the field. He has also served on SFA’s Medical Advisory Board and has been part of SFA’s journey since its inception, helping bring researchers, clinicians, patients, and advocates together to advance progress.
