✨ BIG NEWS: I’m super excited to announce that I’m moving back to New Braunfels, Texas June 1st!!

It’s been wonderful working with the people I’ve seen in the Quad Cities over the last several years. There’s just more opportunities for me there, both with music and chiropractic, and I need to go where I can be most useful. I’ve accepted a position in an established chiropractic office and am looking forward to putting my knowledge and experience to good use in serving the New Braunfels community. I’m also looking forward to plugging back into the thriving music scene in New Braunfels and Gruene. It’s really quite magical there and I miss it.

I will be seeing new and existing patients until I leave in a few weeks so if you’re due for an adjustment or would like some workouts, get in now. I’d love to see you!

UNEVEN DUMBBELLS: Trainers sometimes come up with silly exercise variations like standing on one foot while blinking your left eye and rubbing a kettle bell, without much of a goal in mind. Here’s one that can be helpful to improve balance, coordination, and core engagement. You can keep the dumbbells uneven each set or you might choose to use this as a warmup on the lighter sets and use evenly paired dumbbells for the heaviest set. This a fun way to challenge the nervous system and can be especially useful when working with neurological conditions like Parkinson’s, stroke, MS, and ataxia.

ALTITUDE MASKS: Do these masks simulate training at altitude or improve VO2 Max? The short answer…no.

These altitude masks restrict airflow and challenge the respiratory muscles but do not change the percentage of oxygen in the air so capillary bed density and red blood cell production aren’t effected.

This type of restriction training might be useful for people with asthma or emphysema, where getting the air into the body is the limiting factor. For most healthy people, however, the limiting factor is not how much air they can breath in but rather gas exchange at the level of the alveoli…and this does little for that. It has been studied and these masks do not increase VO2 Max.

The only real benefit for an otherwise healthy person who doesn’t have asthma or emphysema is that these masks might train the diaphragm a bit more. This could be useful to cue proper breathing technique for people who are paradoxical breathers and are using accessory muscles of breathing but otherwise, this is goofy looking gimmick and not really a useful training tool.

You can do a literature search to read the studies or just do a simple google AI search ā€œDo altitude masks imrove VO2 Maxā€ to find out more.

SPARTHOS Training Mask is useful for all athletic sports like running, marathons, cycling, football, soccer, tennis, basketball, triathlons, weightlifting, athletics, Crossfit, hiking, yoga, strength training, mma, boxing, elevation running, track and field, nfl, paintball, baseball, hockey, tenn...

RUSTIC RIDGE: There was magic in the room last night with lots of new and familiar faces. The ever gracious Donovan Gustofson was able to join me on bass and we were all better because of it.

My voice is far from normal. I’m quite hoarse today and will need a few days rest but I’m so happy to be slowly returning from this vocal cord injury and be playing music again šŸ¤ šŸ¤™šŸ¼šŸŽ¶

LEG EXTENSIONS: This exercise often gets a bad rap from orthopedic surgeons. I have used them with great success and would argue that they can be a wonderful part of your programming to build leg strength and reduce pain, particularly in strengthening the VMO when patellar tracking issues are involved.

My personal tip is to make sure the back pad is far enough up so your knee is slighty in-front of the joint of the machine for maximum comfort and stabilization and to add weight slowly when dealing with injuries.

I just did another dive to see if there’s a large body of good research showing leg extensions to be the evil maiming knee killers that medical doctors make them out to be…nope. Here’s an article supporting their use that’s worth reading from Pysiotutors, a well respected group of physical therapists who are actually evidenced-based.

Leg Extensions are one of the most criticized exercises in rehab. But are they actually dangerous or great exercise?
