4 things people with steady energy often do before 9 a.m.

1. Get daylight in their eyes. Morning light is one of the strongest signals your body clock gets, even through cloud.
2. Drink a glass of water before the coffee.
3. Eat a breakfast with some protein, which many people find keeps the mid morning dip away.
4. Move, even for ten minutes. A walk counts.

None of these is dramatic. That is the point. Steady energy is usually built from small things done most days, not a perfect routine done twice.

Pick one this week. Which will it be?

Waking with a stiff neck most mornings?

You went to bed tight and woke up tighter. A new pillow helped for a week, then the stiffness was back.

Sometimes the reason is not the pillow. A nervous system that stays on guard through the day can keep the neck, jaw and shoulders braced through the night as well. When tension keeps returning to the same places, it is often protection that has not yet had the chance to stand down.

Integrated Functional Neurology with Matt DeWild, RN, is nervous system focused work for pain, movement and mind body integration, and it starts with a free 30 minute consultation. New, severe or worsening pain, numbness or weakness deserves a doctor first.

Two people. One question to start with: what would feel like health to you?

Not a number on a chart. Maybe it is sleeping through the night. Playing on the floor with your grandchildren without paying for it the next day. Getting through a work week without your shoulders up by your ears. Feeling like yourself again.

Matt DeWild, RN, and Molly Hinke-DeWild, LISW, both came to this work through their own hard seasons, and both learned that mind and body heal together. They see the people they work with as whole people, not a set of parts.

So, what would it be for you? Tell us in the comments. And read how IFH began in our story.

Doing everything right and still gaining weight?

You are eating well, moving, trying hard. And the scale is going the wrong way. It is easy to blame yourself.

Stress changes the chemistry that runs hunger. When stress lasts for weeks, cortisol stays up, and research suggests it steers appetite toward sugar and fat. Short sleep turns the volume up too: in one well known study, two nights of four hours shifted the hormones that signal hunger and fullness.

So a plan written for a calm, rested body often stops fitting a body running on alarm. Our blog post explains what is happening, and a gentler way to eat when life is hard.

The goal is not to live forever. It is to feel good for longer.

Lifespan is how long you live. Healthspan is how much of that time you spend in good health, doing what matters to you. Healthspan is the part you can work on.

We think of it in four qualities: Energy, Clarity, Connection and Purpose. And it is rarely decided by one dramatic thing. It is decided by what you do most weeks for a long time: how you sleep, eat, move, recover and handle pressure.

Longevity work with Matt DeWild, RN, starts with your nervous system, because a body that feels safe is a body that can repair. It begins with a free 30 minute consultation, in Bettendorf or online.

Back to back meetings, no gap, no air. Here is a reset that fits in two minutes.

1. Stand up and let one long breath out, longer than the breath in.
2. Look out a window, as far into the distance as you can. Let your eyes soften.
3. Roll your shoulders back slowly, three times, and let them drop.

Why it helps: a long exhale leans the nervous system toward calm, a wide distant gaze is the opposite of the narrow focus of a screen, and moving the shoulders releases some of the bracing that builds up through a day of meetings.

Do it before your next call and notice how you walk in.

Cancelling plans you were actually looking forward to?

The dinner, the game, the coffee with an old friend. You said yes gladly. Then the day arrives and you type "So sorry, something came up" with a strange sense of relief.

Once in a while, that is just being tired. When it becomes the pattern, it is worth asking what is underneath. Burnout and depression can look alike from the inside, and they often call for different kinds of help.

Our blog post explains how they differ, where they overlap and how to start sorting out what is going on for you.

If you are in crisis, call or text 988 any time. In an emergency, call 911.

What did you love doing before life got this busy?

Maybe you drew. Played guitar badly and happily. Baked on Sundays. Walked for an hour with no reason to be anywhere.

Things we do purely because we enjoy them are not a luxury. They are some of the clearest signals of safety a nervous system gets, and they connect us with the parts of ourselves that work and worry tend to crowd out.

You do not need an hour. Ten minutes this week counts.

Tell us in the comments: what did you love?

Jumping at every little sound?

A door closes, a phone buzzes, someone says your name, and your whole body jolts. Then it takes far too long to come back down.

A startle that will not settle is often a nervous system that is still on watch, long after it needed to be. It is protecting you, just too hard and for too long.

Therapy with Molly Hinke-DeWild, LISW, brings together proven talk therapy methods with attention to the nervous system, so you understand what is happening and learn practical ways to feel calmer in your body. In person in Bettendorf, or by telehealth anywhere in Iowa. It starts with a free 15 minute phone consultation.

If you are in crisis, call or text 988 any time. In an emergency, call 911.

Tried every diet? Your stress was never on the plan.

Most plans count what is on the plate. Very few ask how you are sleeping, how long the stress response has been switched on, or what your evenings look like when the day has used you up.

Your nervous system sets the tone for sleep, digestion, energy and appetite. When it stays on alert for months, even good changes struggle to hold.

Functional health coaching with Matt DeWild, RN, looks at stress, sleep, nutrition, movement and your nervous system together, and builds a plan around your real life. Sessions are 45 minutes at our Bettendorf clinic or online, and it starts with a free 30 minute consultation.
