A lumbar flap is a type of breast reconstruction that uses skin and fat from the lower back, specifically the “love handle” or flank area, to reconstruct the breast after mastectomy.
The tissue is carefully removed along with its blood vessels and transferred to the chest using microsurgery, where the blood supply is reconnected under a microscope. Because it uses your own tissue, a lumbar flap provides a soft, natural reconstruction.
This technique can be a great option for certain patients, especially those who:
→ Are very thin
→ Have had previous tummy surgeries
→ Don’t have enough abdominal tissue for a DIEP flap
→ Want to avoid implants
Every patient’s anatomy is different, which is why understanding all available donor sites is so important in breast reconstruction planning. To learn more about your options, call us for an in-person or virtual consultation at 310-620-8750.
