For the first time in WHS guideline history, the 2023 pressure ulcer update answers a question clinicians face constantly but rarely find clear guidance on: how do you care for a wound when the patient's goal is comfort, not cure?

In the 1940s, a 40% TBSA burn was often a death sentence. Today, survival rates for 90% TBSA burns are reaching 95%.

What changed? The evolution of fluid resuscitation, early excision, and our understanding of the "Zone of Stasis."

Dr. Shawn Tejiram (MedStar Washington Hospital Center) sat down with Dr. Christina L. Megal (Medical College of Wisconsin) to bridge the training gap for clinicians outside of dedicated burn centers.

At the WHS 2026 General Business Meeting, the society recognized outgoing board members and program chairs, presented awards, and officially passed the presidency from Susan Volk to incoming President Robert Kirsner, MD. A meaningful close to a great week in Charlotte.

When your opening keynote speaker sequenced DNA in space, you know the week is going to be good. 🚀

WHS President Susan Volk and incoming WHS President Rob Kirsner welcomed Kate Rubins, PhD, to the SAWC Spring stage at the WHS 2026 Annual Meeting in Charlotte today. Rubins is a microbiologist, retired NASA astronaut, and the first person to ever sequence DNA in space. The kind of speaker who reminds you why pushing the boundaries of science matters in every field.

To quote Dr Volk a veterinary surgeon-scientist who sees complex wounds in practice "We’re all here to make a difference for patients, whether human or veterinary.”
