Sometimes in life, you dig in and solve the problem.

Sometimes, you slap a basket over it and call it a day.

FTO's spend hours observing new officers in real-world situations. They often see patterns that aren't obvious in an interview or a performance review.

When those concerns are consistently dismissed, the impact of that goes so far beyond one hiring decision.

It sends a message that experience isn't valued and speaking up doesn't matter. Over time, that's one of the ways trust begins to erode and morale takes a hit.

People are much more likely to keep bringing forward concerns when they believe those concerns will be thoughtfully considered.

A healthy culture isn't built by always agreeing. We built it by creating an environment where people know their observations and their voices matter.

When we talk about officer wellness, it's easy to focus on what's not working. Believe me, there is a lot that isn't working.

I've had the opportunity to work with departments and peer support teams, though, that are putting in the work to create an environment where people feel supported, connected, and more likely to access help when they need it.

Most of the time the most effective wellness initiatives aren't the biggest ones. They're the small, consistent actions that communicate that people matter.

The likelihood is low… but never zero 👀

My brain: “This is unnecessary.”
Me: “Noted.”
Also me: still shutting the gate.

Sometimes insight doesn’t override instinct, and that’s okay. We pick out battles sometimes. This is not one of them for me. 😆

Hobbies remind us that we’re still people outside of the roles we carry. This is especially important for first responders and their families. Hobbies give our nervous systems somewhere safe to land while also helping us build identity outside of work, productivity, and survival mode.

They also challenge us in healthy ways. Learning something new, figuring out problems, making mistakes, and trying again helps our brains experience growth outside of stress.

For me, that’s been gardening the last few years. Every season I learn something different. Why one plant thrives while another struggles. How small adjustments matter. It teaches me to pay attention to the nuances and slow things down when my natural instinct is usually to do the opposite.

Here’s to another year of strengthening a growth area, increasing my frustration tolerance, and reconnecting with my own interests.
