An incredible weekend celebrating 30 years of MFMR, capped off by Saturday’s “Legends & Leaders” panel at the Zoo.

Sitting down with former PDs Dr. Michels, Dr. James, and Dr. Fahrenwald (and missing Dr. Guyer!) alongside our current PD, Dr. Brand, offered a great perspective on how far this program has come.

Bringing past, present, and current residents together in one room was the ultimate way to honor 30 years of MFMR.

Here’s to the next 30!

30 years of caring for Montana—and a brand-new look to celebrate! 🌲✨

As we kick off our 30th anniversary week, we’re thrilled to unveil our updated logo. Huge thanks to Dr. Teynor and alumnus Dr. Lopiano for bringing this fresh vision to life.

Since 1996, our mission has never wavered: to develop, empower, and educate full-spectrum Family Physicians dedicated to Montana, especially our most vulnerable populations.

Swipe back through the decades to see how our brand has evolved (💡fun fact- the 2nd logo was designed on a napkin!)

From our newest look back to where it all started in ‘96, every era represents countless lives touched, residents trained, and communities served across our state.

Remote scope, unmatched training. Once a year, one resident travels to remote Mongolia for our wilderness medicine rotation in partnership with BioRegions. This year PGY-3, Dr. Serrano, and our attending, Dr. Gerbasi, took on this experience that included off-grid field care, vast terrain, and an expanded scope that unexpectedly included treating a horse!

MFMR was well represented at the Montana Academy of Family Physicians Primary Care Conference at Chico Hot Springs!

Dr. Barnhardt, PGY-1 and resident representative on the MMA Board of Trustees, presented “Kratom Explained: Clinical Pearls for the Frontline Physician,” sharing practical insights on a growing topic in primary care.

Dr. Solomon presented “Opioid Response Network: Collaborating, Advancing, Responding, Educating,” highlighting resources and partnerships that support physicians and communities in addressing substance use disorders.

We’re proud to see our residents and faculty advancing education, advocacy, and patient care across Montana.

Longer days, warmer weather, and Montana finally showing off ☀️

One of the best parts of residency here is how easy it is to get outside and recharge. Whether it’s catching a Mustangs game, spending a weekend up on Beartooth Pass, or helping out at the RiverStone community garden, our residents make the most of the warmer months and the community around them.

Check out another page .buzz created by our very own Dr. DuPont to see more fun activities around Billings!

This past weekend members of our Wilderness Medicine Track had their summer retreat in the Beartooth Mountains! They spent the weekend working through wilderness medicine scenarios, sharpening practical outdoor skills, and enjoying some of the best views Montana has to offer.

One of the many experiences that makes our program unique, and a pretty solid way to spend a summer weekend 🌲🥾

Each year, one resident from our program (typically as part of the Wilderness Medicine Track) has the opportunity to participate in our global health trip to Peru. This year Dr. Wilson (PGY-1) and Dr. Gerbasi partnered with the University of Mary to serve in Ayavari, Peru. Thanks to for sharing these pictures from their trip! This trip provides the opportunity to care for patients in underserved communities while gaining valuable perspective on medicine beyond the walls of our usual clinics and hospitals.

From meaningful patient interactions, including running a trauma with the local physicians, to utilizing POCUS in resource-limited settings, the trip highlighted the importance of adaptability, teamwork, and compassionate care.

We are grateful to the patients, providers, interpreters, and communities who welcomed our team so warmly, and proud of the continued global health opportunities within our residency program.
