But here's something easy to miss on the back-to-school list: your child's eye health. If they can't see clearly, those brand-new school supplies won't do much good.

📊 Did you know? 1 in 4 children has a vision problem, yet 93% never see an eye doctor during their developmental years. A school nurse's vision screening only checks visual acuity — a comprehensive eye exam checks visual function, eye focusing, refractive status, and family eye health history.

👁️ **What is a Pterygium?**

You might have heard it called "surfer's eye" — but you don't have to be a surfer to get one. A pterygium is a growth of pink, fleshy tissue on the white part of your eye that can extend onto the cornea.

**What causes it?**
Long-term exposure to UV light, wind, and dust — common triggers for anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors here in Montana ☀️

**Signs to watch for:**
✔️ Redness or irritation
✔️ A visible growth on the eye
✔️ Blurry vision (if it grows onto the cornea)
✔️ A feeling of something in your eye

**Prevention:**
🕶️ Wear UV-protective sunglasses
🧢 Use a wide-brim hat outdoors
💧 Keep eyes lubricated in dry, windy conditions

**Treatment:**
Mild cases can often be managed with lubricating eye drops. Larger or vision-affecting pterygiums may need surgical removal — your eye doctor can help determine the best path forward.

💡 **Tip:** Keeping your eye drops refrigerated can add a soothing, cooling effect for extra relief. If the area becomes red, swollen, or inflamed, medicated drops may be needed — reach out to your eye doctor if that's the case.

☀️ Summer Comfort Culprit: Your AC & Ceiling Fans 🌀

Cranking the AC and running ceiling fans all day? Your eyes might be paying the price.

Moving air — whether from air conditioning, fans, or even your car vents — speeds up tear evaporation, leaving your eyes dry, gritty, and irritated. It's one of the most overlooked causes of summer dry eye.

👀 Signs you might be dealing with it:
✔️ Burning or stinging eyes
✔️ Blurry vision that improves with blinking
✔️ Feeling like something's "in" your eye
✔️ Redness by end of day

A few easy fixes: Try angling vents away from your face, running a humidifier in rooms you spend a lot of time in, and taking regular blinking breaks if you're on a screen most of the day and make sure you drink water!

👁️ Summer Fun Shouldn't Come at the Cost of Your Vision!

Whether you're hitting the pool, lake, river, or ocean this season, water can be tough on your eyes. Chlorine, bacteria, and contaminated water can cause redness, irritation, and even serious infections, including:
🔴 Acanthamoeba Keratitis — a rare but severe infection from a microscopic organism found in lakes and rivers that can threaten your vision — and contact lens wearers are especially at risk!
🚨 Think of your contact lenses as tiny sponges — they absorb everything they come into contact with, including bacteria, parasites, and chemicals found in pool water, lakes, and rivers. Once trapped against your eye, these contaminants can cause serious damage that is difficult to treat.

Here's how to protect your eyes all summer long: ✅ Always remove contacts before swimming — no exceptions!
✅ Wear swim goggles
✅ Rinse your eyes with clean water after swimming
✅ Don't rub your eyes — pat them dry gently
✅ See us if you notice prolonged redness, discharge, or blurred vision
