As a family-owned funeral home, we offer four generations of experience to guide families through life's most challenging moments. Dahl Funeral Chapel is located in the heart of Billings, MT and has been providing funeral services, funeral prearrangement, cremation services and bereavement care since 1939. Our Chapel is the second building on Yellowstone Avenue (just off Division St.) sitting betw

een historical Moss Mansion and Central High School. and Division St. just to the south of our building. Pre-arranging for peace of mind. Dahl Funeral Chapel has been dealing with grief stricken families at the time of death for many years. We have worked hard through our services, staff and values to lessen the burden of death as much as possible. We consider our conduct in the details and arrangements of the funeral rites as a sacred trust. Today, many people are recognizing that funeral pre-arrangement is a demonstration of love and consideration. It is a thoughtful decision that relieves the bereaved family from the unnecessary stress of indecision and uncertainty. We have compiled information for your use in pre-planning funeral arrangements. This will provide a very helpful beginning to your peace of mind. Without cost or obligation, we will also explain how funding the pre-arranged service can be accomplished by either a Bank Trust Preneed Funeral Contract or an Insurance Preneed Funeral Contract. These two funding programs can be set up as irrevocable, and is suitable for asset sheltering when considering SSI, Medical Assistance eligibility, or when entering a nursing home.

Peter Ronald O'Loughlin, 79, of Columbus, Montana, passed away on June 9, 2026, in Columbus, MT. Born December 8, 1946, in Great Falls, Montana, to Roy and Josephine O'Loughlin, Pete lived a life of service, dedication, and quiet generosity.

After serving in the Montana Army National Guard and working several jobs in his early years, Pete found his calling in law enforcement. He joined the Chouteau County Sheriff's Office as a deputy in 1978 and went on to serve with the Montana Highway Patrol from 1981 until his retirement in 2007 — a career spanning three decades of service to the people of Montana. Those who worked alongside him knew Pete as a man who took his duty seriously, while never losing his easy smile and ready sense of humor.

In his later years, Pete turned his hands to carpentry, a craft he pursued with the same steady dedication he brought to everything he did. He was a devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Columbus, where he tended the church grounds and, together with his friend Jack Putche, built a Grotto on the property — a labor of love and faith that will endure long after them. Those who knew Pete remembered him as outgoing, generous, and always willing to lend a hand.

Pete is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Linda; his son Brian (Mary Beth) O'Loughlin; his daughters Wendy (Don) Karls and Becky (Mike) Lowe; and his siblings Marie Engellant, Viola "Sis" Figarelle, Dorothy (Ron) Jaraczeski, Ed O'Loughlin, Rob (Shirley) O'Loughlin, Lu (Bob) Rugwell, Lora Williams, Ray (Patrice) O'Loughlin, and Jimmy O'Loughlin; as well as his late brother Jack's wife, Linda O'Loughlin.

He is also survived by his grandchildren Daniel (Candace) O'Loughlin, Christian O'Loughlin-Raygoza (Hugo), Zach (Tasha), Jake, Nick, Luke, Lily, Rachel, Abby, and Katie Karls, and Tommy, Sophie, Brody, Josie, and Howie Lowe; along with 8 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Josephine O'Loughlin, and his brother Jack O'Loughlin.

A Rosary will be held on Sunday, June 14, at 3:00 p.m. at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings, followed by a viewing until 6:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 15, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Columbus, Montana, followed by interment and a reception at the church.

Matthew Joseph McDonnell, 78, of Billings, Montana, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, May 25, 2026, Memorial Day.

Matt was born on October 3, 1947, in Lewistown, Montana, to Milton “Sam” and Nileen McDonnell. He was one of eight children, growing up alongside his siblings Andy, John, Patrick, Sara, Margaret, Mary, and Denny. From an early age, Matt possessed the determination, work ethic, and entrepreneurial spirit that would define his life.

Matt met the love of his life, Shirley, while they were in high school, and they married soon after. Their marriage became a lasting example of love, faith, commitment, and family for their children and grandchildren. Together, they began building their life in Great Falls, where Matt entered the collision repair industry. His work ethic was unmatched. By day, he worked in the body shop, and by night, he taught himself furniture upholstery—always willing to do whatever it took to provide for his family.

In 1978, after moving to Billings, Matt founded Big Sky Crash Repair. What began as a local business grew into a respected company with locations and relationships across Montana. Through hard work, integrity, and a genuine love for people, Matt earned the trust and respect of customers, colleagues, and friends throughout the state and beyond. His leadership extended well beyond business. He served on numerous banking, healthcare, educational, and community boards, including the foundations supporting Billings Central Catholic High School.

While Matt’s professional accomplishments were significant, those who knew him best understood that some of his happiest moments were spent on the golf course. He loved the game, the friendships it fostered, and the stories that came from every round. He traveled far and wide with his closest friends in pursuit of great golf, great laughs, and, whenever possible, another victory over his buddies. He often joked that one of his greatest accomplishments was beating his friends on the course—and those fortunate enough to play with him knew there was more than a little truth in that.

Above all else, Matt was a man of faith. His love for Jesus was evident in the way he lived and in every interaction he had with others. He possessed a rare gift for making people feel valued, welcomed, and important. Whether you had known him for years or had just met him, Matt had a way of making you feel like an old friend.

Though Matt touched countless lives through his work, friendships, and community involvement, his family remained his greatest blessing and proudest accomplishment. He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley; his children, Bryan, John, Matthew, and Christy; 14 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. Matt often said that grandchildren were “the dessert of life,” and he cherished every opportunity to be with them.

Matt will be remembered for his generosity, leadership, sense of humor, unwavering work ethic, deep faith, and steadfast devotion to family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, service, friendship, and love that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at St. Patrick Co-Cathedral in Billings, Montana. A reception celebrating Matt’s life will immediately follow at Yellowstone Country Club.

To those fortunate enough to know him, Matt was far more than a successful businessman, dedicated community leader, or passionate golfer. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, trusted friend, and a man whose life made the lives of others better. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.

Did you know that funeral services and memorial services aren’t quite the same thing?

There’s one key difference. While both events should uniquely celebrate and honor a lost loved one’s life, a memorial service does not have the physical body present. So, if the service takes place after cremation or burial, then it’s a memorial service.

If you have more questions about memorial services, give us a call at (406) 248-8807!
