Wildfire smoke doesn't just affect areas near active fires. Smoke can travel long distances and impact air quality, increasing the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular symptoms for people of all ages.

If the air looks hazy or air quality is poor, take steps to protect yourself:
🌫️ Limit time outdoors
🏠 Keep windows and doors closed
😷 Wear a well-fitting N95 or KN95 mask if you need to be outside
❤️ Pay attention to symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, headaches, or fatigue

Children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and people with asthma, COPD, heart disease, or other chronic conditions may be especially vulnerable.

A few simple precautions can help keep you and your family safer during wildfire season.

Staying hydrated during the summer is about more than just drinking water—it’s also about fueling your body with the right foods. ☀️💧

As temperatures rise, our registered dietitians remind everyone to:
🥤 Drink fluids throughout the day—don't wait until you're thirsty.
🍉 Eat water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, peaches, grapes, and cucumbers.
🥗 Choose lighter, balanced meals to help your body handle the heat.
🏃 If you're active outdoors, increase your fluids and replenish with electrolytes when needed.

Knowing the signs of heat-related illness is just as important. Heavy sweating, dizziness, muscle cramps, nausea, and weakness can all be signs of heat exhaustion. If symptoms become severe or someone has a temperature of 103°F or higher, seek emergency medical care immediately.

A few simple habits can help you stay safe, healthy, and active all summer long.

For most of her life, Carol Raschkow cared for others. But after years of chronic pain and limited mobility, the retired nurse found herself needing care—and a provider who wouldn’t give up on her.

With support from Dr. Erica Bruen at Intermountain Health's Downtown Clinic in Billings, Carol followed a medically supervised plan to reduce her long-term opioid use, lost 135 pounds, underwent hip replacement surgery and began rebuilding her strength.

Today, she attends physical therapy twice a week, travels independently to appointments and is standing and taking supported steps again.

“My worst day now is better than my best day back in 2024,” Carol says.

Carol credits her progress to perseverance, coordinated care and more than a decade of partnership with Dr. Bruen — through in-person appointments, virtual visits and some of the most difficult years of her life.

“Dr. Bruen has been my map, my guide, my lifeline,” she says.

Carol hopes her story reminds others that meaningful change is possible, one step at a time.
