This article really shows us where the division remains at the federal level of rescheduling cannabis. Both sides have valid arguments. The opposing side is concerned about patient safety and proper monitoring. This is an accurate description of what a cannabis clinician does. If we want to argue that cannabis is actually a safer alternative, then cannabis clinicians must demonstrate how we are accomplishing this.

Understanding cannabinoid ratios. CBD is one of multiple emerging minor cannabinoids you can find in ratios to THC in your medical cannabis edibles. We still need a lot of research to better guide us as to which ratios are most ideal for specific conditions but these offer a good starting reference. Other minor cannabinoids you may see in rations to THC include CBG, CBC, CBN, and THCV. It is important to remember that THC is your only psychoactive cannabinoid. Also to note, CBD has more competition at the CB1 receptor site of the ECS with THC than we believe the other minor cannabinoids do. Because of this, CBD can reduce the psychoactive effects of THC.

Understanding THC:CBD Ratios

The more we know, the easier it is to navigate our medical journey.

Ever looked at 5:1 or 1:5 THC:CBD and wondered what that actually means?

The ratio tells you the relative amount of THC compared with CBD in a product.

5:1 THC:CBD
More THC than CBD. For every 5 parts THC, there is approximately 1 part CBD.

1:5 THC:CBD
More CBD than THC. For every 1 part THC, there are approximately 5 parts CBD.

Neither ratio is automatically “better.” They’re simply different cannabinoid profiles, and understanding the difference can help patients have a more informed conversation about the products available to them.

And remember — ratios aren’t doses. Always look at the actual milligrams of THC and CBD in the product too.

The more we understand what we’re looking at, the better questions we can ask along our medical journey.

This is how quickly our industry can change. Unfortunately, harmful h**p products have ruined it for so many legitimate h**p farmers and CBD companies. Not to mention the honest retailers I know locally who have taken care and time to source their CBD products and properly educate their customers on how to use them safely. Now, this does not impact our MS medical cannabis program as far as CBD products purchased in medical cannabis dispensaries. These products are state regulated and that is different. This is not a good sign for the DEA rescheduling of cannabis. I had been hopeful, but this proves there is still overall lack of support for cannabis from lawmakers on both sides.

Congress ended the longest shutdown in U.S. history and quietly set a one-year clock on re-criminalizing most h**p products. A 0.4 mg cap, a $28 billion market on the line, and a fight that is only getting started.
