At Medical Center Pediatrics, we're proud to introduce Dr. Rhea Shah, a board-certified pediatrician who is passionate about helping children build healthy foundations that last a lifetime.

Dr. Shah believes one of the most rewarding parts of pediatrics is developing long-term relationships with families and being a trusted partner through every stage of childhood from newborn visits to the teenage years.

When she's not caring for patients, you'll likely find her exploring Detroit's incredible food scene, planning her next trip, doing Lagree and spending time with her husband and daughter.

Do you know how to tell the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke?

Signs of Heat Exhaustion include:
🔸 Heavy sweatingand a “prickly heat” sensation
🔸 Pale, clammy skin
🔸 Dizziness or weakness
🔸 Headache
🔸 Nausea or vomiting
🔸 Muscle cramps

Move your child to a cool place and initiate simple cooling measures (such as ice packs, fanning, cold towels) along with drinking water.

Signs of Heat Stroke:
🔸Throbbing/severe headache
🔸Muscle Cramps
🔸Nausea/vomiting

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately. While waiting for help, move your child to a cooler area and begin cooling them with cool water, ice packs, or cool, wet towels. Do not force fluids if they are confused or unconscious.

Knowing the difference can make all the difference. Stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.*

Keeping kids hydrated doesn't have to be boring! 🚰 When the temperatures rise, staying hydrated is one of the best ways to keep little ones feeling their best.

If getting your little ones to drink water is a struggle, try these fun, kid-approved ideas to encourage more water throughout the day:

🍓 Infuse water with fresh berries, lemon, cucumber, or mint for a naturally refreshing flavor.

🥒 Snack on water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and oranges.

🧊 Freeze fruit into ice cubes to make water extra fun and colorful. Just remember - ice cubes are a choking hazard for children less than four years old.

🔹 Blend fresh fruit into puree and then pour into molds to make homemade popsicles. Let the kids help make them for a healthy summer treat!

As your child enters their teenage years, they’ll naturally start having more independence as they do things like driving and applying for jobs.

While you can’t do everything for your child, there are some things you can do to help foster healthy independence!

🔹Encourage independence at their doctor appointments by having them respond to any questions from their pediatrician rather than looking to you to answer for them
🔹 Balance relationships with peers and adults in their lives
