Practice sun safety this summer! ☀️We encourage you to get outside and play this summer, but do so with sun protection in mind by doing the following:

🔸 Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF of 30 - 50 and reapply every 2 hours (sooner after water exposure)*
🔸 Seek shade when possible
🔸 Hydrate with water and electrolytes
🔸 Avoid direct sunlight during peak UV hours (typically 10am - 4pm)
🔸 Wear protective gear like hats, UPF clothing and sunglasses

*Please note that sunscreen is not approved for infants under 6 months of age
Sun protection is a multimodal approach and no one likes a sunburn! Keep the smiles going by staying proactive! 😀

One of our patient perks is our in-house lab! 🧪 What does this mean for patients? It means your child can get their results faster!

Our lab is equipped to perform hemoglobins, complete blood counts, lead and cholesterol levels, and urinalysis. Many of these are via simple capillary finger pokes which can be less traumatic than a traditional blood draw for little ones. We can also test for strep throat, mononucleosis, influenza, RSV, and COVID (with rapid PCR DNA detection depending on insurance).

We have partnered with Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital, DMC, and HealthTrackRx (a premier PCR-based infectious disease laboratory with rapid results) to provide more comprehensive testing. For off-site testing, specimen collection is performed at our office, and we usually receive results within 24-72 hours.

Allergies seem to be getting your kiddo down? Here’s a simple breakdown of common over-the-counter options to help manage symptoms. 🙌

Nasal sprays 👃
🔹 Steroid nasal sprays (brands include Flonase, Nasacort, and Rhinocort) help prevent symptoms by reducing inflammation when used consistently.
🔹 For added relief, antihistamine nasal sprays (like Astepro and Patanase) can be used as needed.
🔹 Non-medicated options like saline sprays can also help rinse allergens from the nose.

👄 Oral antihistamines: Options like Zyrtec, Claritin, and Allegra can help relieve mild to intermittent allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itching.

👁️ Allergy eye drops: Helpful for itchy, watery eyes during high pollen days.

A quick note: Benadryl is no longer recommended as a first-line treatment for allergies due to side effects like drowsiness.

Every child is different, and the right treatment can vary! Remember to follow the instructions on the label for use and approved ages. Have questions? Talk with us about what’s best for your child.*
