This week, we had the opportunity to take the Broome County Health Department's Creating Healthy Schools and Communities Team on a tour of two school gardens their funding helped support! 🌱

We’ve been hard at work revitalizing the gardens at West Middle School and Woodrow Wilson Elementary in the Binghamton City School District. After sitting unused for several years, these gardens are coming back to life as hands-on learning spaces where students can explore gardening, discover where their food comes from, and build confidence trying new fruits and vegetables.

These gardens will provide meaningful educational opportunities for youth while helping create healthier school communities for years to come.

Thank you to the Broome County Health Department for supporting our school gardens and helping make this work possible!

We were thrilled to host our 3rd Annual School Garden Teacher Training on May 8th! 🌱🍅

This year, 25 educators from across Broome County and Tioga County joined us to grow their knowledge and skills in supporting school gardens in their districts. We were also joined by our friends from the Creating Healthy Schools and Communities program at the Broome County Health Department, whose funding helped support some of our Binghamton City School District gardens this year, and our partners from Broome-Tioga BOCES and the Rural Health Network.

Our day began with a visit to VINES:Volunteers Improving Neighborhood Environments, where Executive Director Amelia LoDolce shared the history of VINES, the incredible work they do throughout our community, and the impact of urban agriculture and food access initiatives.

Teachers then headed to the VINES Urban Farm for some hands-on learning in the gardens! Participants spent the morning weeding, spreading compost and fertilizer, and planting dinosaur kale and collard greens while learning practical gardening techniques they can bring back to their own school garden programs. (and they did it in the rain with no complaint!) 🌿

After lunch at Cornell Cooperative Extension-Broome County, educators joined our dedicated Master Gardeners for a tour of the Cutler Botanic Garden and vegetable garden. Our Master Gardeners shared valuable tips, tricks, and low-maintenance strategies for growing vegetables successfully, even with limited time and resources.

Thank you to all of the educators, partners, and volunteers who made this year’s training such a success. We are excited to continue growing school gardens and garden-based learning opportunities across Broome-Tioga Schools!

Farm to School is a partnership between CCE, Rock on Café, and the Food and Health Network. We couldn't do this work without you!

We love seeing connections come to life in the classroom 🌱🐰

Students at Susquehanna Valley CSD recently brought together two of our programs, Farm to School and Ag in the Classroom, in a hands-on, memorable way!

Fourth graders at Brookside Elementary have been growing two types of lettuce in their aeroponic tower garden, made possible through funding from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension-Broome County.

When our Ag in the Classroom team visited with Roper the bunny, students took their learning a step further, making predictions about which lettuce he would prefer and then testing their hypothesis in real time!

Even better? Students were able to taste their very first harvest while Roper joined in on the fun.

A big thank you to Miss Boulter and Susquehanna Valley CSD for sharing these moments!
