This National Recovery Month, SAMHSA reminds us that recovery happens together. Strong community partnerships can connect people with treatment, peer support, and lifesaving resources.

Did you know that through a partnership between the Alabama Department of Mental Health and Jefferson County Department of Health, anyone in Alabama can complete free naloxone training and request a free kit? Naloxone can reverse an opioid overdose, and in 2025, ADMH distributed 47,325 kits statewide.

Partnerships like this help save lives by putting naloxone and overdose-response training into more hands.

Are you a graduate-level health professions student passionate about improving health outcomes in rural and under-resourced Alabama communities?

The Alabama AHEC Scholars Program is part of a national initiative preparing future health professionals to serve rural and under-resourced communities. Through interprofessional learning, leadership development, and hands-on community experiences, Scholars collaborate with peers across Alabama, gain valuable workforce experience, and support the health of Alabamians statewide.

Applications for Alabama AHEC Scholars Cohort 9 are now open!

Eligible disciplines include Medicine (MD/DO), Dentistry, Clinical Psychology, Physician Assistant Studies, Nurse Practitioner programs, Pharmacy, Optometry, and Nurse Midwifery.

In 2025, Health Center Program awardees served 316,993 people across Alabama.

That care takes a team: physicians, nurses, behavioral health and dental professionals, pharmacists, care coordinators, Community Health Workers, and many others working together to meet local needs.

As part of this broader workforce, Alabama AHEC is helping expand the state’s Community Health Worker workforce, strengthening connections between people, resources, and care.

🤝 THE MEANING OF ‘CONVENING’ 💜

Our ongoing relationship with Bloomberg Philanthropies reminds us that the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences is part of something much more significant than one school.

Last week, ASHS and the ASHS Foundation joined healthcare and education partners from across the country at Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Healthcare High School Partner Convening in New York City, where we connected with fellow members of this groundbreaking national network of 13 schools in 9 states that is preparing students for high-demand careers through innovative, early, healthcare-focused learning and unique hands-on training.

What made the experience especially meaningful was seeing how far ASHS has come. As we count down to welcoming our historic inaugural class on Aug. 13, we’re no longer just learning from others: We’re also increasingly contributing to the conversation.

Foundation Vice President Rob Pearson shared ASHS’s approach to building successful public-private partnerships in one panel discussion, while Patrick Trammell, interim CEO of our valued partner Whitfield Regional Hospital, and Dr. Becky Avery Reamey, assistant professor of Family and Community Medicine and director of the Alabama Statewide Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program (Alabama AHEC Network), brought their expertise and perspectives to the networking.

We were also moved by the presence of Mike Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg.org. His participation was a powerful reminder that this partnership extends far beyond funding. Bloomberg Philanthropies has remained deeply invested in helping project leaders learn from one another, solve challenges together and build healthcare high schools that will transform lives and communities for generations to come.

Thank you to Bloomberg Philanthropies for believing in ASHS, for creating this incredible network of innovators and for continuing to walk beside us as we prepare to open Alabama’s first healthcare-focused residential high school next week.

They also show future healthcare professionals how care continues beyond one appointment. Through Community-Based Education Training (CBET) and AHEC Scholars, we connect students with community-based learning experiences.

What sparks a future career in healthcare? Sometimes it starts with a single hands-on experience.

Black Belt Alabama AHEC was excited to participate in The University of West Alabama STEM Camp, where more than 100 K-12 students explored healthcare careers through interactive activities, including CPR and AED demonstrations, dental health, PPE, and aging simulation.

By introducing students to healthcare careers early, they are helping inspire the next generation of professionals who will serve communities across Alabama.
