We've been caring for children for decades. We want to help you help them grow and mature fro

m birth until adulthood. Dr. Kenneth Elmer, MD, FAAP

Dr. Elmer grew up in an Air Force family. After Texas, California, Japan, and Illinois, he landed the plane in Alabama, where he stayed for Autauga County High School, Auburn, UAB Medical School, and UAB Pediatrics Residency. He has been practicing Pediatrics at Simon-Williamson Clinic since 1986. Among his professional activities, he has been involved in various aspects of the management of SWC, including a term as President. He’s a self-confessed geek and has managed parts of the clinic’s shared file system, intranet and internet pages. He has served as President of the Children’s Hospital medical staff and is currently on the Executive Board of the state chapter of the Academy of Pediatrics. He maintains privileges at Children’s Hospital of Alabama, BBH Princeton, BBH Brookwood, and St. Dr. Elmer is married to the former Julie Houston, who is a native Alabamian, and they have three grown children. He serves as an Elder at his church and plays guitar, bass, or keyboard and sings with the music program there. He still enjoys a little morning hoops, and is pretty sure the other (much younger) players call him “doc” because his talent and style of play remind them of Doctor J. Dr. Elizabeth Sahlie, MD, FAAP

Dr. Sahlie was born in Montgomery, Alabama and grew up in Wetumpka, Alabama (Elmore County). She attended Auburn University where she began her training as a Speech Pathologist. She continued her education at Vanderbilt University, where she received a Masters degree in Communication Disorders and subsequently worked at the Bill Wilkerson Center, a renowned speech and audiology clinic. Her work with children there led to a desire to pursue a career in Pediatrics. She attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine (UAB), and completed her residency at the Children’s Hospital of Alabama, where she also served as a Co-Chief Resident. Dr. Sahlie joined the Pediatrics staff at Simon-Williamson Clinic (SWC) in 1996 and has been serving the SWC community for over twenty years. She has served on the SWC Management Committee for many years, including a two year term as President of the Clinic. She has a special interest in breastfeeding medicine, is a Certified Lactation Counselor, and advocates for the promotion and protection of breastfeeding. She maintains privileges at Children’s Hospital of Alabama, BBH Princeton, BBH Brookwood, and St. Dr. Sahlie is married to James Scott and they have two daughters, Lizzie and Clara. She enjoys cooking, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. She is an Auburn fan and loves visiting her alma mater. Dr. Natalie Tibbetts, MD, FAAP

Dr. Tibbetts is originally from the Florida panhandle and loves the sandy white beaches of the Emerald Coast! She attended college at the University of Florida and is an avid Gators fan. After college, Dr. tibbetts spent one year teaching high school Biology in her hometown before attending medical school in Miami, Florida. She then moved to Birmingham to complete her residency at UAB. Dr. Tibbetts and her husband have one daughter. She loves to travel, attend sporting events, and spending time with family and friends. Dr. Tibbetts has been part of the SWC pediatric unit, Birmingham, Al, since 2007. Dr. Nancy Zumstein, MD, FAAP

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Zumstein grew up in Ariton, a small town in southeast Alabama, where her father was the town’s only physician. Among her fondest childhood memories includes accompanying her Dad on house calls and Saturday night hospital rounds, which also doubled as family outings. After completing residency training in Houston, Texas, Dr. Zumstein worked at a large multispecialty clinic caring for children from many different ethnic backgrounds. During her time as a Texan she was privileged to participate in several overseas medical missions trips, became a Houston Rockets and Astros fan, and most importantly, met her husband. In late 2001, closer proximity to family drew Dr. Zumstein home to Alabama, where she worked solo in medically underserved Russell County. Dr. Zumstein considers this five-year commitment among the most challenging but rewarding experiences of her career. Her husband and she eventually settled on Birmingham to call our home at which time she joined Simon-Williamson Clinic. Dr. Zumstein’ss favorite part of working at Simon-Williamson Clinic is having the opportunity to provide care for children from all walks of life, developing relationships with them and their families as they grow, and being among a group of committed physicians who feel the same. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, dogs and cat, family and friends, church, cooking, biking, and working in the yard. Dr. Suzanne Wallace, MD, FAAP

Dr. Wallace grew up in Birmingham. She graduated with honors from New York University, then attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed her residency training in Pediatrics at Emory University in Atlanta. Her special interests include breastfeeding medicine (she is a Certified Lactation Counselor) and understanding the social determinants of health and development. Dr. Wallace is a devotee of the fine and performing arts, and fills her free time cooking, bicycling, watching baseball, and hanging out with her husband and their energetic pit bull, Lefty.

Being safe around fireworks is critical for both kids and adults, as the risk of injury is greatest for teenagers and young children.

-Always light fireworks away from other people because they can backfire or launch in an unexpected direction

-Never light fireworks toward homes and keep them away from brush and leaves

-Do not try to relight a defective firework

-Soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them in a trashcan
