At a very early age, Aubrey Bushelon had a vision of owning and operating his own funeral home. As an aggressive, hardworking, goal – oriented teenager, he knew that the opportunity that he was given to work at Poole’s Funeral Home on the weekend would help him realize his vision. He received an insurmountable amount of knowledge and experience from his mentors, the late founding owner, James Pool

e, and his sons John and Ernest. They took Aubrey under their wings because of his gentle spirit and willingness to work and learn. Aubrey was employed at McKesson Robins Wholesale Drugs and retired after 25 years of service. He then concentrated on his vision, and established Bushelon Funeral Home in 1975. He reached out to many, and was known for helping bury those who needed his assistance monetarily. Aubrey’s compassion for humanity and life’s work was dedicated to funeral service. He passed along his affinity to be of service to those in need to his family. Today, the torch continues as the Bushelon Family continues to “Care For You & Your Loved Ones”.

Families deserve dignity, accountability, and peace of mind during one of the hardest moments of their lives.

As funeral professionals, we walk beside grieving families every single day. When there are issues involving cemeteries, records, markers, or maintenance, the emotional impact on those families can be devastating.

Multiple families have filed lawsuits after paying for headstones for their loved ones at George Washington Carver Memorial cemetery in Birmingham that they say never showed up. In one case, the wrong headstone was placed on a grave.

Your complaints are not going unnoticed. The reality is this: in Alabama, there is currently no agency with the authority to actively enforce regulations for cemeteries.

Families deserve accountability. They deserve perpetual care, dignity, maintenance, and protection for the final resting places of their loved ones. Until legislation creates a regulatory body with enforcement power, many complaints continue to fall into a gap with little recourse for the consumers we serve.

This conversation must remain centered on the bereaved families …the people who deserve peace when visiting their loved ones. It is time to put consumers first and work toward meaningful cemetery oversight in the state of Alabama.

Tag your local officials and ask them to support legislation that puts the consumer first.
