Needing someone’s help and struggling in your relationship with them can both be true.

Chronic illness can make relationships complicated—especially when you depend on someone for caregiving, transportation, help after procedures, or support during health crises.

Sometimes that dependence makes it harder to speak up, set boundaries, or acknowledge when a relationship is causing emotional pain.

At Heart and Mind Counseling, we understand that chronic illness affects more than physical health. It can reshape relationships, identity, independence, and emotional well-being.

💙 Featured Clinician: Lindsay Sima, LCSW

Lindsay works with chronic illness, trauma, and complex relationship dynamics. As a Certified Narcissistic Abuse Treatment Clinician, she brings additional expertise in understanding difficult relationship patterns, boundaries, and emotional safety.

“Why can’t I just do EMDR on myself?”

It’s a question we hear often.

EMDR is much more than moving your eyes back and forth or following a light on a screen. A trained EMDR therapist is continually assessing what is happening during processing—helping identify appropriate targets, noticing when you’re becoming overwhelmed or shutting down, recognizing when processing gets stuck, and knowing when to slow down, redirect, or stop.

For people with complex trauma, the work can be even more nuanced. Preparation, pacing, and stabilization may be important before processing difficult experiences.

That clinical guidance is part of what makes EMDR therapy—not simply a technique you perform on yourself.

💙 Featured Clinician: Katie Dines-Mazzacco, LCSW

Katie is an EMDR-trained therapist at Heart and Mind Counseling who works with trauma, complex life experiences, relationships, and the emotional impact of medical challenges.

Our practice includes multiple clinicians trained in EMDR and trauma-focused approaches, allowing treatment to be individualized to each person’s needs.

Healing begins with feeling understood.

At Heart and Mind Counseling, we believe effective therapy starts with understanding the whole person—not just a diagnosis. Life is rarely just anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, relationship challenges, or chronic illness. Often, these experiences overlap, and your care should reflect that.

Congenital heart disease changes more than the heart. It shapes lives. ❤️

It influences how we experience childhood, relationships, milestones, uncertainty, resilience, and hope. While every journey is unique, the emotional impact of congenital heart disease often deserves just as much attention as the physical one.

At Heart and Mind Counseling, we believe healing begins with feeling understood.

Our congenital heart disease specialty began with the vision of Dr. Corinne Smorra, DSW, LCSW, and has grown through the collective expertise, compassion, and dedication of our multidisciplinary team. Together, we support individuals living with CHD, their families, caregivers, and the healthcare professionals whose enduring relationships with patients often become an important part of their own lives.

We invite you to explore how we approach therapy for the congenital heart disease community—and the experiences that shape life with CHD.

Therapy + Medication Management, Working Together 🤝

At Heart and Mind Counseling, we believe the best care happens when providers work as a team.

Our Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Catherine Nwora, provides psychiatric evaluations and medication management for clients in Michigan, New York, Louisiana, Washington, Texas, and Colorado.

One advantage of receiving both therapy and medication management within our practice is the seamless collaboration between your therapist and psychiatric provider. Working together allows us to create a more coordinated and personalized treatment experience.

Already have a therapist outside of Heart and Mind Counseling? That’s perfectly okay too. With your permission, Catherine is happy to collaborate with your existing therapist because our priority is providing the support that best meets your needs.

At Heart and Mind Counseling, we put our clients first—always. 💙
