Temperatures are rising across Alabama this week, and kids are at risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke if they play outside or have athletic practices in this hot weather. It's important to understand the difference between and and what to do if your child has these symptoms.

Meet Dewontis! Tomorrow, he will meet the donor who saved his life during a National Marrow Donor Program Registry Drive at the hospital.

Every year, 18,000 patients are diagnosed with life-threatening blood cancers or diseases for which a blood stem cell transplant may be the patient’s best or only hope for a cure. Seventy percent of patients don’t have a fully matched donor in their family. You can be someone’s one in a million by joining the donor registry.

You can also order a free swab kit by visiting my.nmdp.org/s/join or texting “ChildrensAL” to 61474. Only people between the ages of 18 and 35 can join the registry.

Happy National Dog Day! 🐾 Our PetsRx Animal-Assisted Program brings more than wagging tails to Children’s of Alabama. Therapy dogs can help reduce stress and anxiety, encourage movement and participation in therapy, provide comfort during difficult moments, and create opportunities for connection and healing. We’re grateful for the four-legged friends who help make hospital days a little brighter.

Bookworm Day promotes the amazing benefit of reading to our NICU families for improved child literacy. This program helps the babies in our care bond with their parents through books!

Children’s of Alabama was proud to once again host the Alabama Grocers Association’s Buy Alabama’s Best Food Expo! Retailers from across the state and hospital staff gathered to sample Alabama-made products from Buy Alabama’s Best vendors.

This year marks the 20th campaign year of Buy Alabama’s Best! The campaign kicks off in September at select retailers, with funds raised supporting children and families facing a cancer or blood disorder diagnosis. https://buyalabamasbest.org/

Congratulations to Amy Martin, Infusion Clinic, who received the DAISY Award!🌼

"During one of the hardest times for our family, Amy took care of my son in a way I’ll never forget. My son is autistic, and she was so patient and intentional with him. She found ways to make him smile and laugh and made him feel safe. She also took the time to answer every question my husband and I had and never made us feel rushed or dismissed. Amy is truly an amazing nurse and person. She made a lasting impact on our family, and I’ll always be grateful for the care she gave my son."

We’re ready for football season! 🏈 Auburn University Cheerleading and University of Alabama Athletics joined us today to kick off this season’s Chick-fil-A Pick for Kids program and celebrate last season’s $20,000 donation.

With every Crimson Tide or Tiger interception, Chick-fil-A will donate $1,000 to The Charity League Hearing & Speech Clinic at Children’s. The clinic provides comprehensive evaluation and therapy services for children requiring inpatient and outpatient audiology and speech-language treatment.
