For fun, a layered belly dance drill to try at home. Come dance with us if you want to learn how to do these drills and then dance them (adding footwork for traveling when ready). And yes, it's a fantastic workout too!!!
Drill #1: full time hip alternating singles (right then left glute NOT the legs) counts 1-2-3-4 on the right hip/glute; if you want to layer, then add quarter time alternating pelvic locks (lower ab, then lower back) with count 1 (of 4) on front/lower ab lock.
Drill #2: full time alternating leg/quad shimmy same counts as above (uses momentum from legs AND glutes, notice heel movement is increased here as a result of legs moving vs. drill #1 feet are grounded and legs only move as a result of glute isolations); if you want to layer then add alternating hip slides quarter time with count 1 (of 4) to the right. Then I added circle slides.
FEET TOGETHER, KNEES BENT! keeping feet straight ahead and together is more challenging than a wider stance. Stand as wide as needed, and bend knees (squat), to find the movement and observe the large result of the movement as well. When ready, keep stance tight and with only a micro bend in the knee to allow an up and down (vertical) hip movement.
