Today is AK Global Day ☀️

Actinic Keratoses (AKs) are rough, scaly patches caused by long-term sun exposure and UV damage. They commonly appear on areas that receive the most sun over the years, including the face, scalp, ears, chest, hands, and arms.

🔎AKs may:
• Feel dry, rough, or sandpaper-like
• Appear red, pink, tan, or skin-colored
• Burn, itch, or become tender
• Persist despite moisturizing

While some AKs remain stable, others can progress into squamous cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer. Early detection and treatment are important.

Signs it’s time to visit your dermatologist:
☀️ A rough or scaly spot that doesn’t heal
☀️ A lesion that crusts, bleeds, or becomes painful
☀️ New or changing spots on sun-exposed skin
☀️ Multiple rough patches developing over time
☀️ A history of significant sun exposure or tanning bed use

Protect your skin with daily SPF, routine skin checks, and early evaluation of suspicious spots. Your skin remembers every sunburn, but prevention and early treatment make a difference.

Thinking about tattooing over a mole? Here’s why dermatologists strongly advise against it ⬇️

Tattooing over a mole can make it difficult to monitor important changes in the skin. Pigment from tattoo ink may camouflage warning signs of skin cancer such as:
• Changes in color
• Irregular borders
• Growth or asymmetry
• Bleeding or crusting

Even benign moles should be evaluated carefully before being tattooed over. In some cases, trauma from tattooing can also irritate the area and complicate future skin examinations or biopsies.

If a mole changes after being tattooed, diagnosis can become more difficult because the ink may interfere with both visual assessment and dermoscopic evaluation.

Before getting a tattoo near or over any mole, it’s best to have the area examined by a board-certified dermatologist. Your skin’s long-term health is worth protecting. ☀️
