I wish more families knew this before they hit a crisis:

It is possible to plan ahead for long-term care—even if private pay isn’t sustainable forever.

Many families use a “private pay + Medicaid spend-down” approach, where care starts privately and transitions to Medicaid when eligibility is reached.

The key is planning early and understanding what that path can look like before urgent decisions have to be made.

This process can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. I’m always open to having those conversations.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear:
“Adult Family Homes are just like nursing homes.”

They’re actually very different.

AFHs are smaller (typically 6 residents or fewer - at Madrona Nest, we plan to have only 4), which allows for more personalized care, quieter environments, and deeper relationships.

For many families, that smaller, more intentional setting makes all the difference.

In a smaller setting like Madrona Nest, routines are flexible, meals can reflect personal preferences, and relationships actually have space to grow.
